Visakhapatnam :

The IT sector in Andhra Pradesh is gathering momentum and Visakhapatnam in particular is bound to emerge as a major fintech hub in the country, according to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

He was speaking here on Thursday after inaugurating the office of Franklin Templeton Investments here on Thursday.

He said it was a good sign for the city that a major company, a Fortune 500 company, like Franklin Investments had chosen to set up a centre in the city. “The company will invest Rs 450 crores here gradually on setting up the centre and provide 2,500 high-end jobs. Today it has opened the office,” he said. He recalled how the company had first set up the centre in Hyderabad in the united AP way back in 2002 and he expressed confidence that the Vizag centre would be even more successful than the one in Hyderabad.

Jennifer M Johnson, the president and the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company, said the company had immense faith in the Chief Minister “who is the key architect and visionary CM” who built up the IT sector in Hyderabad and is doing so now in Visakhapatnam. She expressed confidence that the Vizag centre would flourish. She also thanked Rajkumar Velagapudi, the president and CEO of Innova Solutions Inc., responsible for bringing Franklin Investments to Vizag.

State IT Minister N. Lokesh said it was a historic moment.

Conduent centre

Earlier, the Chief Minister inaugurated the centre of Conduent Inc. in the IT park at Rushikonda. The company will generate 5,000 jobs in the next two years and it will invest roughly Rs 650 crores.

The CM said he was trying to create the right eco system for IT companies to flourish in the city.

However, he lamented, some political parties were creating hurdles in the onward march of the State on the path of progress. He said unfortunately a hue and cry was being raised over the allotment of land on the beach road to Lu Lu group to build a world class convention centre and shopping mall. “Vizag needs such a convention centre. After all, it can only be built on land and not in the air,” he said, taking a dig at the political parties and others opposing the decision.

Earlier, the Chief Minister also participated in the second convocation ceremony of the IIM-Vizag where he exhorted the MBA graduates to become entrepreneurs instead of mere job-seekers.

Therax Portal helps physiotherapists to share home exercise programmes with patients

A neuro physical therapist from Guntur has won the National Geographic Chasing Genius Challenge in the U.S. for designing a web/mobile application that helps patients with home exercise programmes in their native language.

Dr. Asha’s web application — Therax Portal — is now helping physiotherapists to prescribe, customise and share home exercise programmes with their patients in their native language.

Thousands of people living in rural areas across the world now use the app to get access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises. In places where there is no internet facility, people are taking printouts of the programmes. “People in rural areas are forced to travel long distances to get quality treatment, and by using the application, they can do the exercises at home. The exercises can be modified by their physiotherapists during check-ups. I have watched my grandparents struggle to get access to effective rehabilitation as they were living in rural areas in India,” Dr. Asha said.

The Natgeo challenge is part of a marketing strategy to popularise a television series — Genius — and rewards innovative ideas. Participants have to create a one-minute video about an idea they had to solve a problem using wireless connectivity. Over 1,050 entries competed for the award, and of them, 10 ideas were considered for final round held in March and the winner was chosen based on votes through social media platforms such as Facebook.

Dr. Asha entered the competition with an idea, “Empowering Telerehabilitation with digital connectivity”, and stood out as the winner. She is at present residing at Philadelphia in the U.S. where she works at Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital. Daughter of former principal of Government College for Women, Guntur, Gummadi Narayana Rao, Dr. Asha graduated from Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, and later moved to the U.S. to pursue Master of Science in Physical Therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

Neeraja Kona to launch a clothing label, Kaluva

Neeraja Kona
Neeraja Kona

After movies and restaurants, the stylist ventures into the retail sector

She hobnobs with the top brass in the southern film industries, styling them for their film projects, endorsements and public appearances, and her social media feeds provide pointers to fashion and beauty trends. In the course of styling for her projects, Neeraja Kona found herself developing a deep liking for breathable fabrics in comfortable silhouettes. She might wear designer labels now and then but most often, she says she’s at ease wearing handloom cotton kurtas. “A store like Fabindia would be my go-to place for workwear clothes. And, I’m aware that for many women, comfortable clothing is of utmost priority,” she says, talking to us a day after announcing her forthcoming clothing project, Kaluva (lotus), on social media.

She’s been doing the groundwork for a year. Her fascination for block prints took her to Jaipur where she began working with the craftsmen. Pockets of Rajasthan are known for their intricate block print designs, from the Anokhi museum in the vicinity of Amer Fort to the bylanes of Jaipur where one would find several block printers busy at work. Kaluva will have a range of cottons and muls block printed in Jaipur. Certain colours have become synonymous with block prints. Neeraja wants to present a broader colour palette, “Apart from the vegetable dyes, indigos and reds one associates with the bagru prints, we will have a variety of pastels; the plan is to use natural dyes and a mix of chemical colours to arrive at new shades. It would be good to have colours like mauve.”

Kaluva will launch in a couple of months, first as an online store and eventually as a brick and mortar space. The USP, says Neeraja, will be the affordable pricing, “I might be working with designers for film projects but this clothing line is not going to be ‘a designer range’ so to speak.”

The workshop for Kaluva will be in Neeraja’s hometown Bapatla, where she will be roping in homemakers and single women looking to better their livelihoods. “Block printing will be done in Jaipur, the master tailors in Hyderabad will be working on silhouettes and the stitching will happen in Bapatla,” she informs.

In recent years, several start-ups have entered the handloom clothing space with online stores. Ask Neeraja what will set Kaluva apart and she laughs, “It’s okay if Kaluva doesn’t really stand out from the crowd or offers a few silhouettes one might find in the retail sector. I want women to relate to the brand and be happy wearing the clothes. A few stores in Hyderabad specialise in easy, comfortable cotton clothing. But the rest of the stuff available is generic in terms of colours and patterns.”

There’s always scope for a new clothing line and coming from someone who has worked closely with the fashion industry, Kaluva could be worth the wait.

First ‘all-women’ railway station in A.P.

But Chandragiri’s remoteness takes the sheen off the ‘Women’s Day gift’

Ahead of International Women’s Day, the South Central Railway (SCR) management on Tuesday named the little-known Chandragiri station near Tirupati as the “all-women railway station” in the zone. As SCR General Manager Vinod Kumar Yadav formally handed over the responsibilities to a team of enterprising women, Chandragiri became the first station in Andhra Pradesh to get the privileged status, as Begumpet got the tag for Telangana the same day.

The station has four station masters, one booking clerk, one health worker and two technical positions. From Tuesday, women will don all the above roles. However, the beneficiaries of the “Women’s Day” gift were not all too happy, in view of the station’s location away from human habitation.

Chandragiri, native place of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has its far-flung station located beyond Narasingapuram village.

Lacks facilities

The nearest main road point is more than a kilometre away and the only option to reach the highway is to take a strenuous walk on the dark, narrow road through the village. There is no reliable public transport to the station. There is no railway quarters and the village is also too small to dwell.

Only eight passenger trains from Tirupati halt here every day — two pairs bound to Katpadi, one pair to Villupuram and one pair to Guntakal — a mere 234 passengers either embark a train or alight in a whole day and its daily collection is a mere ₹5,000.

Women employees working in Tirupati, Renigunta and Chittoor stations have been transferred to this little station for this purpose.

Lost the race

As the idea is to name a smaller station located close to a main station, the upcoming Tiruchanur station between Tirupati and Renigunta was initially touted to get this tag. However, it lost the race as it is yet to get full-fledged infrastructure like road and platforms, leave alone facilities for women.

Along with Mr. Yadav, Guntakal Divisional Railway Manager Vijay Pratap Singh assured the staff to provide all support at the earliest.

Builders cash in on rising accommodation needs of KIA Motors officials

A “mini South Korean township” is coming up in Anantapur town, about 60 km from the under-construction automobile manufacturing facility of South Korean car major, KIA Motors, near Penukonda.

With the work on the KIA factory on the outskirts of Penukonda going on at a fast pace, the arrival of Korean nationals to oversee the work at the site has increased, and so has the demand for accommodation. Signboards in Korean language have sprung up offering such lodging.

“We have no suitable facilities here for foreigners, especially senior and middle management of KIA. Penukonda doesn’t offer good accommodation choices, and the offices at the construction site aren’t good enough to house them,” said a senior Indian official of KIA who did not wish to be identified.

In the initial days, officials were put up in guest houses, government and private, at Puttaparthy and Anantapur. But with more South Korean nationals coming, builders with constructed buildings on the outskirts of Anantapur started to offer apartment complexes as guest houses.

“We cashed in on the opportunity of housing the Korean nationals who would eventually want to bring their families and settle down close to the factory and the nearest city. We then started our new venture at Ramnagar and decided to even advertise in the Korean language,” said Prashant Mallem, who even employed a Korean national as a facilitator-cum-marketing agent for his apartments.

It is estimated that 30 flats on the outskirts have been bought and occupied by Korean nationals, while almost a similar number have booked apartments.

“Once the assembly line installation starts, a lot of South Koreans will be at work and need accommodation for a few months at least,” said Sung Min, a South Korean national, who works with a builder in Anantapur.
