Mango farmers high on hopes

Flowering is extensive and the crop is healthy, say farmers

Think of mangoes, and your are sure to conjure up images of the sweet, juicy, pulpy fruit that lures one and all during summer. And if one considers the varieties, the Nuzvid ‘rasalu’ certainly tops the list. This year, the farmers are hopeful of reaping a rich harvest of the famous ‘chinna rasalu’, ‘banginapalli’, and other varieties, as flowering is good and the crop in the region is not afflicted by an disease. If the weather cooperates, there will be good produce by March end, they opine.

“Krishna district, particularly Nuzvid, is known for ‘chinna rasalu’. Every year, we export some thousands of tonnes of the fruit to Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai, and other places,” say the farmers. Flowering is robust and extensive in the orchards at Nuzvid, Agiripally, Nunna, Thotlavallur, and other areas in the district.

In some areas, the fruit is in a tender stage and the crop will be ready in the next 20 days.

“Compared with last year, flowering is good and we are expecting a good yield this season. The investment is also less this year, as the crop is healthy,” a mango farmer V. Srinivasa Rao of Nekkalam Gollagudem village told The Hindu.

“I raised chinna rasalu, pedda rasalu, and banginapalli varieties in five acres. We have already picked the fruit twice, as there was flowering in the months of November and December. We are happy as the position is good so far,” said another farmer S. Venkata Ratnam of Adavi Nekkalam village.

“Eighty per cent of trees are in flowering stage. The recent rain did not cause much damage to the crop. This year the produce may be double than last year,” said S. Veeranjaneyulu, who has orchards in the Nuzvid area.

“Most of the produce will be used for consumption in Vijayawada, Khammam, Guntur, East and West Godavari, and neighbouring districts. Fine quality of ‘banginapalli’ fruit will be exported to other States and countries,” said Mr. Venkata Ratnam.

The restaurant will come up in Jubilee Hills

And to the delight of the family members, the first celebrity who stepped into the restaurant, which is fast-nearing completion, on Tuesday evening was none other than Sania’s doubles partner on the WTA Tour Bethanie Mattek-Sands and her husband. Giving her company was a visibly relaxed Sania Mirza, taking a break from competitive tennis because of a niggle.v

“Well, it is Anam who has shown a lot of interest in this project, which is incidentally run by four partners. Since Sania is still very active in the tennis circuit, she will be making only frequent visits,” reveals Imran Mirza in a chat with The Hindu.

Clearly, the 27-year-old Bethanie was in for a pleasant surprise by the ambience that is coming up in the restaurant even as it is obvious that the Mirzas and their partners are keen to showcase the brand value of India’s finest ever women’s tennis player.

Better facilities for air exports sought

Air Travellers’ Association of India organises round-table

There is a tremendous potential for air exports from the city and urgent measures are required to facilitate handling of export and import cargo, said the speakers at a round-table on air exports organised by Air Travellers’ Association of India — ATA (I) — in association with the Vizagapatam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here on Monday.

Lack of handling facilities for outbound export cargo at the airport has deprived Air India Visakhapatnam – Dubai flight (via Hyderabad) of utilising its cargo hold of four tons for nearly a year. They sought that all the agencies involved like the Airports Authority of India (AAI), Navy, Customs and AP Trade Promotion Corporation (APTPC) should ensure that cargo handling facilities were improved at the airport.

Rajya Sabha Member T. Subbarami Reddy recalled his efforts in getting various amenities at the airport over the years. He said that was made possible through constant follow-up with the authorities concerned, persuasion and personal rapport with the officials. He felt that such efforts were required even now to keep things moving.

He said that though the Government of India had sanctioned manpower, the Navy was saying it would take a long time for operating the airport round the clock in view of recruitment and specialised training.

Mr. Subbarami Reddy said that he had not bothered about this issue for the past few months as other political leaders were trying to do something. “Since they had failed, I promise to take up the issue of 24-hour operations and posting of an Additional Drugs Controller in Visakhapatnam besides trying to promote tourism in Visakhapatnam,” he said.

Airport Director K. Srinivasa Rao said that temporary arrangements were made for cargo exports within certain limitations of size and weight. He was optimistic that the cargo terminal would be completed by August this year.

Cold storage

AP Trade Promotion Corporation (APTPC) Manager Srimannarayana Rao sought provision of space and screening facilities for cargo handling at the airport. A cold storage was also required for perishable goods.

ATA (I) president D. Varada Reddy said that the objective of the round-table was to expedite air exports and infrastructure development at the airport. He said that Air Arabia was planning to operate flights to Sharjah, IndiGo to Singapore and Colombo and felt that 24-hour operation of the airport was a must for more international carriers to come to Vizag.

Station Manager of Air India, V.T. Jairaj, Director of GSEC Limited Samir Mankad, Executive Director of Hospira India K.V. Raju, Capt. Sriram Ravi Chander of Visakha Container Terminal Private Limited (VCTPL) and VCCI president K. Ramabrahmam were among those who participated.
