Direct flight to benefit Telugus in UAE

Dubai flight is the first step in providing international connectivity to city’

People from the Visakhapatnam region living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are in a jubilant mood with the announcement of a direct flight to Visakhapatnam from Dubai via Hyderabad, according to Sarat of Sharjah-based All Andhra Association of UAE.

At a media conference organised by the Air Travellers Association of India (ATA-I) here on Saturday, he said there were 2.5 lakh Telugus residing in Dubai, of whom 30 per cent were from the Visakhapatnam region. They had been representing to the Government of India for a long time seeking introduction of a direct flight to Visakhapatnam.

Holiday season

The association has been spreading the message of international connectivity through Facebook and has got 5,000 responses so far.

Mr. Sarat said that April being the holiday season, there would be a huge demand for direct flights from Visakhapatnam to Dubai and back. The direct flight would be advantageous to all sections of people living in the UAE, as Air India was also planning to provide transportation to other cities.

Sriram Ravichander, vice-president (logistics) of ATA (I), described the Dubai flight as the first step in the direction of providing international connectivity to Visakhapatnam. The ATA (I) would prepare a roadmap for getting more flights to international destinations such as Singapore, Malaysia, and the U.S. He recalled the efforts made by Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D. Purandeswari and Rajya Sahba Member T. Subbarami Reddy in getting the direct flight.

Export potential

Capt. Ravichander said every flight could carry four tonnes of cargo and help in boosting exports.

ATA (I) president D. Varada Reddy said it was unfortunate that it took 10 years to get an international flight after the Government of India had declared way back in 2002 that Visakhapatnam could serve as a ‘Gateway to the East’ under the ‘Look East Policy’ due to its proximity to countries in the east.

ATA (I) secretary-general Rajgopal Reddy spoke.

    They propel our space programme

ISRO has, to its credit, developed a sound culture of involving the private sector in several of its projects.

A clutch of private players has emerged as key input providers for India’s missiles.

They are literally fuelling India’s space ambitions. Two medium-sized, listed companies in the private sector are, in their own way, contributing critical propellant technology to launch our satellites and missiles.

While Andhra Sugars, based in Tanuku in the agri-rich coastal Andhra district of West Godavari, has developed a range of liquid propellants that fuel the satellite launch vehicles, Premier Explosives Limited, situated close to Hyderabad, fabricates solid propellants for key missiles. Each has, during the last decade or so, attained expertise, set up sound facilities, and has trained professionals to meet the stringent demands of the Indian space and defence sectors. Interestingly, the core business strengths of both are completely different. For example, Andhra Sugar is mainly into sugar, organic and inorganic chemicals, while Premier Explosives is into providing explosives for the mining and commercial sector.

    ANDHRA SUGARS’ EXPERTISE

In space and rocket technology, liquid, solid and hybrid propellants are used. Liquid propellants are derived from petroleum, cryogenic (low temperature) and hypergols (instant igniters). Solid propellants are usually nitro cellulose and nitro glycerine etc., while a hybrid fuel is a mix of liquid and solid. Andhra Sugars has established such skills in its plant located in a small village called Saggonda, approximately 30 km from Kovvuru near Rajahmundry in coastal Andhra Pradesh. The plant routinely produces caustic soda. Hydrogen, which is the raw material for the propellant that the company is making to meet the demands of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is a by-product. ISRO uses liquid hydrogen as the propellant in the Geo Stationary Launch Vehicle (GSLV). The GSLV, which can place heavier satellites of the Insat class in orbit has three stages, which are sequentially ignited for the rockets to zoom into space. They are the solid propellant (first), liquid propellant (second) and cryogenic propellant (third). To the credit of this private sector enterprise, Andhra Sugars now fabricates all these propellants.

With technical support from ISRO scientists, the company has set up a facility to liquefy hydrogen gas and then get the desired purity at the plant. This follows an agreement signed in the year 1997 with ISRO. The ISRO got actively involved in cryogenic rocket technology to power the GSLV with initial help from Russia. It was in 2003 that Andhra Sugars signed a formal contract and the plant was established in 2006, says Mr G. Ramesh, a top executive at the plant.

Andhra Sugars has a 20-year contract with ISRO for the supply of propellants. It is the only fabricator of the key material in the country at present. The ISRO has a small facility at Mahendragiri, in Karnataka, where it undertakes tests for cryogenic technology development. Given the association of Andhra Sugars from the mid-1980s in the space programme, ISRO has also supported it in setting up the plant in Saggonda.

ISRO has, to its credit, developed a sound culture of involving the private sector in several of its projects, both for launching and converting the huge amount of satellite data generated towards applications for national development.

Mr Ramesh said separation of hydrogen from caustic soda is easy. However, the difficult part is to liquefy and then purify hydrogen gas to meet the stringent standards demanded by ISRO, especially for the GSLV flight. The company has imported the necessary plant equipment to fulfil the task. It has taken a couple of years, but now it has trained people and gained technical expertise to do it, says Mr Ramesh.

On January 28, 2012, the first batch of liquid hydrogen was dispatched in a special tanker to make sure that the liquid hydrogen is maintained at 20 degrees Kelvin or minus 253 degrees C (cryogenic temperature). To transport the material, a tanker, which is thermally insulated has been specially imported from Europe, he explained. It takes five days to reach the material to Mahendragiri.

Liquid hydrogen is known as rocket fuel because of its wide applications in space technology. It is also used as the fuel storage in an internal combustion engine or fuel cell. Interestingly, hydrogen gas as fuel to power transport vehicles is gaining momentum. Cars and buses running on hydrogen gas have been demonstrated.

    MISSILE PROPELLANTS

Premier Explosives Limited, essentially a company involved in the manufacture and marketing of explosives and accessories, got associated with the strategic sector more than a decade ago. It is producing solid propellants for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to power its missiles and also to meet some of the needs of the space programme.

Building on its strengths and trust imposed in it by the DRDO, it has recently expanded facilities at Peddakandukuru in Nalgonda district of Andhra Pradesh. With an investment of Rs 10 crore, this new project will focus on solid propellants for tactical missiles, like Nag (anti-tank), Astra (air-to-air), Akash (surface-to-air) and Pinaka (multiple-rocket launcher).

Mr A. N. Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director of Premier Explosives, said the company has been producing solid propellants since 2003 for the DRDO. The present facility for tactical missiles is an attempt to help the country reach self-reliance in defence supplies. In the successful November, 2011, launch of Agni-IV (beyond 3,500-km range intermediate range ballistic missile), the company was given the job of making the second of the two-stage rocket motors, along with the two igniters.

In the last few years, the Secunderabad-based company, with a turnover of around Rs 103 crore during the fiscal 2010-11, has already supplied critical components like the ‘smokeless’ composition (which helps an aircraft avoid detection after the launch of the missile) and missile motors for the Astra missile and components for the short-range Pinaka missile.

Recognising its capabilities, ISRO has vested it with the responsibility of operation and maintenance of its second propellant plant at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, SHAR, Sriharikota. Premier Explosives signed an agreement in 2007 for Rs 70 crore for a 10-year period to handle this important task.

    PRIVATE SECTOR ROLE

The interesting aspect of the contributions of several small and medium enterprises to the defence programmes is that they aren’t just providing products, but building engineering expertise, design and industry capability that will stand the country’s needs in good stead, said Mr Avinash Chander, Chief Controller (Missiles and strategic sectors) of the DRDO.

There are several companies like Premier, MTAR, RAP, to name a few, which have been started by first-generation entrepreneur engineers. They take pride in their work, do engineering for satisfaction, and support the country’s efforts towards self-reliance. They are the backbone of several of the DRDO’s projects.

The multi-billion-dollar defence projects on the anvil open up huge opportunities for the Indian private sector.

    National rowing championships from tomorrow

    Hyderabad, Feb 15 (UNI)

The 31st Open National Rowing championships will be held at the Hussain Sagar Lake here from tomorrow. About 350 of the country’s top national and international rowers comprising men and women, representing 19 Associations will vie for honours in the five-day championship, which will begin with the 2,000 metres events tomorrow.

President of Rowing Federation of India (RFI), C P Singh Deo told reporters here today that in a first-of-its-kind, the event is being organised under the newly invented technical traffic system. The same has been given a professional touch by the sport’s chief national coach,Dronacharya awardee Ismail Baig. This is aimed at helping the rowers to get a taste of the prevailing International standards, Mr Deo said. He said the climatic conditions and breeze across the Lake were ideal for potential Olympians to sail into international reckoning.

The RFI President said that 2,000 metres events will be held on Thursday and Friday while the 500-metre sprint event will be held on February 18 and 19. The event is, however, losing out on the cream of talent because the ever formidable Punjab and All India University teams have stayed away from the championship. Mr Singh Deo said that Punjab will be missed because some of the finest contemporary talent comes from the state, which is in the midst of Assembly elections.

The top five finishers in each category will participate in the London Olympic qualifiers in Korea in April. Incidentally, in the 14th Asian Rowing Championship, held at Hwacheon in South Korea, India had won a gold and bronze in addition to two silver medals.

Glory to be restored: Plans afoot to draw tourists to Ashoor Khana

    Hyderabad:

Having been freed of encroachments, the 400-year-old Badeshahi Ashoor Khana is now all set to woo tourists. If proposals put forth by the state department of tourism materialize, the Qutub Shahi era monument may start undergoing renovation by next month.

The Badeshahi Ashoor Khana, built in 1594 by Mohammed Quli Qutub Shahthree years after the construction of the iconic Charminar, has been at the receiving end of official neglect and vagaries of nature for long. Collapsed roofs prevented Shia devotes from optimally using it during Muharram months, while encroachers deprived tourists and visitors from enjoying its heritage value. Finally at the behest of a high court order, a drive against encroachers was initiated in 2009. But it was not until December last year that the monument was completely rid of encroachments. Now the authorities are pondering over the task of turning it into one of the best tourist destination in the city.

Requesting anonymity, an official in the tourism department, said that an elaborate plan to the tune of Rs 4.36 cr for restoration of the Ashoor Khana and the adjoining buildings was presented to central tourism secretary Rajan Habeeb Khaja when he visited Hyderabad last week. The plan depicts structural restoration works to the roof lime plates of Ashoor Khana, major restoration works in the Niyaz Khana and Naqaar Khana, besides other auxiliary buildings. The roofs of both these edifices had collapsed in 2007, warranting extensive repairs. The official said that the plan envisages not just structural restorations but also restoration of the function of the buildings.

“The Naqaar Khana was used as a communication centre where drums were beaten to inform public about installation of Alams. After restoration, we may contemplate having an exhibition here to showcase the Muharram highlights of Hyderabad,” said the official.

Chandana Khan, in-charge secretary of tourism department confirmed that there are plans in pipeline for the Ashoor Khana. “During our discussions with the central tourism secretary issues pertaining to city and rural heritage were discussed. The Badeshahi Ashoor Khana is an important part of the city’s heritage and needs to be spruced up,” she said, declining to give more details.

The Ashoor Khana’s caretakers said that the Union tourism secretary had heard their complaints and conducted a detailed inspection of the monument.

“During the last eviction drive, part of the caretaker’s house was destroyed. We brought this to the notice of the union secretary. Taking notice of the dilapidated state of the auxiliary buildings, the secretary also commented on the proximity of neighboring buildings. He also directed the state tourism and archeology officials to ensure smooth development of the Ashoor Khana into a tourist destination,” Abbas Mousvi, a member of the caretaker’s family said.

Heritage activist however caution that the restoration should be done in accordance with the historical nature and usage of the building.

“The officials had constructed a restaurant in the Qutub Shahi tomb which did not go with the historical and architectural ambience. Restorations at the Badehshahi Ashoorkhana should happen keeping in view its sanctity, as it is primarily a place of mourning. This should not be forgotten when works are planned,” said activist Sajjad Shahid.

Hyderabad to host IndiaSoft 2012 next month

    Hyderabad: February 13th

Business deals worth Rs 400 crore in the information technology sector are expected to be concluded between Indian and overseas firms at the 12th international conference IndiaSoft, the flagship IT event of the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), in Hyderabad between March 21 and 23.

This is the third time that Hyderabad is hosting the event.

“In the last year’s event, business deals worth Rs 300 crore were concluded. This year it will be more as a larger contingent of foreign delegates have confirmed their participation,” Mr D.K. Sareen, Executive Director of ESC, told media persons here on Monday.

A significant feature of this edition of IndiaSoft will be the larger participation from emerging countries, which are now in the focus of Indian IT firms in the SME sector.

“About 30 delegates from Latin American countries, 30 from African countries and 25 from the Middle East will be participating in the event. Totally, we expect 360 foreign delegates from 70-odd countries,” he said.

The event is an important one for SMEs in the IT business, as these smaller firms could showcase their products and services to prospective clients globally. While the top 200 IT companies in India account for a 80 per cent share in the country’s IT-related exports, 2,200 SMEs account for only 20 per cent.

    TWO MORE EVENTS

The AP Minister for Information Technology, Mr P. Lakshmaiah, said “Hyderabad will host two other international IT-related events. While the International Conference of Software Engineers will be held here in 2014, the International Internet Companies for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN) is likely to hold its convention in the city in 2013.”

    Sania-Anastasia captures Pattaya Open

Sania Mirza of India combined well with her Australian partner Anastasia Rodionova to get the better of H. Chan and Yung-ja Chan of Taipei 3-6, 6-1, 10-8 to win the women’s doubles final of the Pattaya Open tennis championship in Thailand on Sunday evening, according to information received here.

The top-seeded duo of Sania and Anastasia rallied well from a first-set deficit to down a fighting fourth-seeded combine of H. Chan and Y. Chan, who despite losing the second set easily, looked very good in the decider in a final which lasted 65 minutes.

This happens to be the 13th WTA title for the Hyderabadi Sania and also the first in the year 2012.

It may be recalled here that the 25-year-old Sania Mirza has entered the semi-finals of two events – mixed doubles and women’s doubles – in the last month’s Australian Open championship.

This victory comes as a huge morale-booster for the Indian tennis star, who is keen to stay in the world top 10 rankings in women’s doubles (she is currently ranked World No 7) to be in with a chance to compete in the 2012 London Olympics, ahead of a very demanding circuit wherein she has to defend lot of points as part of this objective.
