Red sanders has medicinal properties, say researchers

Hyderabad :

Red sanders, the prized wood that thrives in the Seshachalam forests in Chittoor-Kadapa-Nellore region of Andhra Pradesh, has been found to possess a plethora of medicinal properties to fight several diseases and disorders including gastroenteritis, ulcers and diabetes.

A joint study by researchers from four prominent educational institutions revealed that the leaves, wood and roots of red sanders tree contain many chemical molecules that have curative properties.

Red sanders, its high demand in the international market notwithstanding, has always remained an enigma as for as its real end use is concerned. There have been several myths attached to the red sanders in the absence of concerted efforts to study the pharmaceutical and other benefits of this rare and endemic tree.

In fact, the AP forest department has instituted a research study to find out what the buyers would actually do with the red sanders. The study is currently underway.

Meanwhile, researchers from MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, Karnataka, Prist University, Tamil Nadu, Sebha University, Libya, and Mother Theresa Postgraduate and Research Institute of Health Science, Pondicherry, have validated a few of the medicinal properties of red sanders.

The tree has anti-bacterial properties with clear action against harmful bacteria like Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Some of these bacteria are found in hospital environment with resistance to certain antibiotics.

Red sanders is also capable of fighting eye diseases, inducing vomiting and giving relief from mental issues.

“The heartwood is known to possess molecules which help in fighting diabetes, intestinal worms, high body temperatures, body swellings, diarrhea, and internal bleeding. Many more pharmacological activities, claimed by traditional practitioners, are yet to be explored,” the study published in the World Journal of Pharmaceutical Research said.

The research team comprised S Kavimani, Mohammad Azamthulla and R Balasubramanian.

Some of the claims, which still need scientific revalidation, are the ability of the red sanders oil to cure skin diseases, piles, wounds, bone fracture, psoriasis and leprosy, they said adding that “research interest to evaluate its therapeutic potential has developed recently perhaps on realization that the tree may contain novel chemicals, which exhibit a wide range of pharmacological effects”.

Times View

Red sanders is an enigma and this explains why there is such a high demand for this wood in the international market. Some believe it is an aphrodisiac. Others argue that it is an antidote for snakebites and scorpion stings. As long as the myth associated with red sanders is not busted, smuggling of the prized wood continues. The AP forest department should involve as many research bodies as possible to decode the red sanders and protect this rare tree from being axed by smugglers.

New lease of life for Emu farmers

EmuANDHRA30mar2015

It is no longer an endless struggle for Emu farmers in the State. They were in doldrums a few years ago, and most of them had given up the vocation and moved on.

However, some managed to continue, thanks to help from LB Processors, a US company, and they have now reached breakeven.

In line with a five-year contract between LB Processors and Emu Farmers Cooperative, the former will provide specialty oil to cosmetic and dietary supplement industries. It will also refine emu oil supplied to it by farmers before offering it to cosmetic industry.

LB Processors founder president Paul Binford and chief operating officer Caleb Binford, a father-son team, said they would buy a minimum of 12,000 gallons and a maximum of 20,000 gallons of oil a year from the oil extraction facility owned by the cooperative at Agiripalli in Krishna district.

Emu Farmers’ Cooperative Company CMD M.R. Rao Prasad said farmers had been struggling feed birds owing to financial constraints a couple of years ago. With bankers abandoning them, most farmers moved to other vocations. However, a group of 16 farmers, with the help of CMI, a consultant, set up a quality extraction unit and worked out a way to air-lift emu oil to the United States in May 2013.

They have exported 18,350 gallons (68,730 litres) of oil since then, Mr. Rao Prasad said. CMI US director Rajan Eadara said LB Processors made use of an all-natural process to refine the oil. Meanwhile, the number of emu farmers in the cooperative has gone up from 16 to 40.

The cooperative also plans to sell ready-to-cook frozen meat shortly. “There is a growing market for emu skin also, and, in future, the cooperative is planning to sell cosmetics made from emu oil,” Mr. Rao Prasad said.

Visakhapatnam :

The Araku valley in Visakhapatnam district, known previously as only a hot tourist spot, has become famous for its coffee cultivation during the past 10-15 years and in the years to come it will also be recognised as a large bio-dynamic farming zone, according to Manoj Kumar, CEO of Hyderabad-based Naandi Foundation.

He said in an interview that so far “the focus has only been on chemical agriculture, or organic agriculture, but the future belongs to bio-dynamic agriculture which preserves bio-diversity and takes care of soil nutrition.”

The Girijans of Araku valley are practising bio-dynamic agriculture, he said, with the help of NGOs like Naandi.

He said bio-dynamic farming would produce organic food, improve quality and yields of crops as well and enrich soil. “If we pursue bio-dynamic farming, there is really no need for GM crops,” he said.

He said the foundation would continue to encourage and help the Girijans in the valley to pursue coffee cultivation and in future it would also take up mango cultivation. “We will encourage them to grow Banganapalli variety of mango which is famous in AP,” he said and the target was to have 40,000-50,000 tonnes of mangoes from the valley.

Manoj Kumar said coffee and cash crops were bringing prosperity to the region, but there was also the danger that with prosperity consumerist trends may gain ground, and that would be detrimental to the natural habitat of the tribals and their nutrition may also suffer. “We are educating them and sensitising them on the crucial aspect,” he explained.

He said the Mahindra & Mahindra group was financing the project along with some European companies, and “the Government has to come up with the right policy framework to encourage the private sector and the NGOs working in the area.” He said Chief Minister N. Chandra Babu Naidu had adopted a village in the Araku valley and promised all co-operation in its development effort.

He said that after the devastation of Hudhud cyclone in the valley a massive afforestation drive would be taken up to make up for the lost green cover.

The sound of temple bells and hawkers is often drowned by non-stop traffic that zips through the restless roads. Once upon a time, this 300-acre neighbourhood was a deserted village where people were engaged in farming and cattle-rearing.

As the years rolled by, Seethammapeta has become one of the busiest localities that houses several small enterprises, tailoring shops, eateries, kirana stores, temples and a variety of outlets that sell home needs. Those who have been living here for generations say that the colony is self-sufficient and closely knit.

AtaGlanceANDHRA04mar2015

Located amidst National Highway near Gurudwara, Rajendra Nagar and Dwarakanagar main road, Seethammapeta exudes an ancient charm. The unique feature of the locality is the four mukha dwaramulu (arch-shaped entrances) – Sri Kanakamma Ammavari Mukha Dwaram, Sri Sitaramula Mukha Dwaram, Sri Parvateeswara Alaya Mukha Dwaram, and Sri Krishna Yadu Vamsi Mukha Dwaram leading to Kanakamamba Ammavari alayam, Sri Radha Krishnula alayam, Parvateeswara alayam along with Durga Ganapathi, Hanuman, and Saibaba temples.

“You will not find such entrances anywhere else in the city. A couple of them have been built by the members of Sri Krishna Yuvajana Seva Sangam. People bond over family functions, festivals and jatara which form an integral part of our lifestyle. More than 80 per cent of the residents are from Yadava community who are into dairy business,” says Eesarapu Pydi Raju, a resident and chairman of three temples in the colony.

Colony maintenance

When it comes to maintenance of the colony, most of the lanes, although they are hardly six feet wide, look neat except a few spots that are heaped with debris. “We feel responsible for maintaining cleanliness in our colony. We regularly organise awareness programmes on health and hygiene as it helps in educating the slum-dwellers who form a part of the colony,” says Vijay Kumar, a resident.

In their quest for building a thriving startup community, young innovators from across the country are able to make a beginning in spreading awareness in Visakhapatnam.

UP Global, which was founded by Andrew Hyde in 2007 and converted into a non-profit organisation two years later to popularise ‘startup weekend’ concept in Boulder, Colorado, has now become a thriving startup community with presence in 660 cities across 120 countries with thousands of aspiring and successful innovators. The initiative is supported by Google for Entrepreneurs, Bill Gates and Mellinda Foundation, Amazon, and other organisations.

The first startup weekend conducted in the city at Prism Degree College recently becamea big hit with participation by several youngsters, majority of them students.

Anyone with an idea, as an individual or team, can attend the startup weekend and launch an enterprise within 54 hours.

The programme was organised by 12 engineering students from Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram.

“We ask them to spell out their ideas and get support from those already in the field with success stories and experience to motivate them further, improve their ideas, and groom them as entrepreneurs,” says UP Global community leader Sayan Ganguly.

One of the organisers of the city’s two startup weekend programmes, Sayan is co-founder of E2P Group, which deals with R&D and other consultancy services. He is a B.Tech final year student at GITAM University.

Now, Vizag has Ganguly and Sushant Mohapatra, who also studies B.Tech at GITAM, as community leaders, along with 16 volunteers to spread the idea of startup communities using social media.

“Though it is a Herculean task, the initial response is quite encouraging,” says Sushant.

With successful entrepreneurs volunteering to be mentors and new-found confidence after attending 54-hour boot camp, most of those attending the startup weekend are now raring to go.

“With a strong will power, anyone can start an enterprise and own a billion dollar company one day,” says Sayan.

India’s fifth largest private sector bank, Yes Bank, opened its flagship branch – the first in Andhra Pradesh — here on Thursday.

Inaugurating the branch at Dwarakanagar here, Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao said the high-tech branch would shift the focus from plain vanilla transactions to high-end value added services.

The bank would open two more branches at Rajahmundry and Nellore. The city which at present had two branches would have four or five more. The bank had set a target to have 25 branches in Andhra Pradesh in next three years, according to its Group President R. Ravichander.

The flagship branch showcased the cutting edge technologies in tune with the bank’s aim of transforming branches from being mere transaction platforms into service-centric advisory centres, he said.

The state-of-the-art branch was the seventh operational branch of the bank in Andhra Pradesh. Some of the innovative services being offered free of cost were secure and instant money transfer, including bill payments with two-factor authentication and unique online aggregation service under proprietary branch ‘Money Monitor’ on the net banking platform, said Mr. Ravichander.

eGovWatch: Wipro, Andhra Pradesh ink deal to build Enterprise Architecture

The vision of the state of Andhra Pradesh is to use eGovernance as a tool to provide integrated services to its citizens through a free flow of information
The vision of the state of Andhra Pradesh is to use eGovernance as a tool to provide integrated services to its citizens through a free flow of information

Andhra Pradesh Government has signed an MoU with Wipro for building and implementing the State Enterprise Architecture (APSEA).

The APSEA aims to be a lever for transformational change in the way government services are conceived, designed, delivered and consumed, state’s IT, Electronics and Communications Secretary B Sreedhar said, adding the Bangalore-headquartered IT major would be engaged for a two-year period.

“The vision of the state of Andhra Pradesh is to use eGovernance as a tool to provide integrated services to its citizens through a free flow of information. APSEA is an essential first step to achieve the vision of the State of Andhra Pradesh,” the MoU said.

APSEA intends to make the state government “future-ready” by changing from departmental stovepipes to a citizen-centred approach to government services achieved through transformation of the front, middle and back office operations, it was stated.

Sreedhar said APSEA necessitated collaborative working and information sharing between departments, forming a virtual/digital network of departments organised around citizen services and their outcomes.

APSEA shall follow a multi-level approach to account for different layers of government bodies.

To ensure relevancy and pragmatism, government services will be taken up progressively, based on their priority.

These services representing the business of government would be analysed for inter-departmental linkages, for information, automation/digitisation and infrastructure requirements.

Service delivery would be supported by deep collaboration between departments in terms of information flow, application interaction and common infrastructures.

Services would be supported by deep collaboration between departments in terms of information flow, application interaction and common infrastructures.

Services would be evaluated for actual outcomes, rather than outputs.

Countries like South Korea, Singapore, the United States, Estonia, Norway, Denmark, Australia and New Zealand have already embraced a holistic architectural approach to e-governance, according to him.

Agriculture Minister Prattipati Pulla Rao has invited investments in agriculture and allied sectors by private companies to increase yields and make farming profitable in Andhra Pradesh.

Companies should take up demonstration adopting 5,000 to 25,000 acres with the aim of increasing yield by two to five quintals and the government will provide Rs.5,000 per acre, he said.

He was addressing a conference on “Agricultural investment opportunities in Andhra Pradesh,” organised by the Agriculture Department, Small Farmers Agri-business Consortium (SFAC) of the Government of India and FICCI here.

CMDs and representatives of 25 companies are participating. The State has opportunities to set up warehouses, seed and fertilizer units at international standards, he said.

The State stood first in fisheries with more than 50 per cent exports.

The Chief Minister had discussions with companies like WALMART, Jubilant and Pepsico to explore horticulture potential.

He said companies may come out with proposals for entering into a Memorandum of Understanding with the State government after a meeting with the Chief Minister. Under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVV) State and Central governments would offer subsidies.

Managing Director of SFAC Parvesh Sharma said the basic aim of Public Private Partnership in Integrated Agriculture Development was to increase the primary producer’s share in the value chain from 25-30 per cent to the international average of 50 per cent.

While the government would contribute 50 per cent of the cost of projects, the remaining should come from private companies or from farmers.

CMD of NSPL M. Prabhakara Rao said providing market linkages would benefit farmers, investors and consumers. After participation for three years in Maharashtra, his company would submit proposals for fourth year.

Panchayat Raj Minister Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu, HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Minister for Labour K. Achhen Naidu and Agriculture Commissioner K. Madhusudhana Rao spoke.

Special Chief Secretary, Planning, S P Tucker, was present. Ruchira Saini from FICCI coordinated.
