HCL SSHS (State Street HCL Services) Facility, a joint venture between HCL Technologies and US-based State Street Corporation, has opened its IT centre at Medha Tech Park at Ganavaram near Vijayawada airport.
Nara Lokesh, State IT Minister, who was the chief guest for the inauguration, said the IT platform would give a great opportunity to the local talent. Michael Brager, Chairman of the board of State Street HCL India, was also present on the occasion along with senior members from HCL leadership team.
The joint venture offers high-end financial services. The facility, spread over 63,000 sq ft is expected to generate 1,000 plus high-end employment opportunities in the areas of capital market, fund administration, investment management and brokerage services.
Anoop Tiwari, Vice-President, HCL Technologies, thanked the State Government and the IT Minister for their co-operation.

A time-lapse video recently telecasted by television channels showed Railways constructing a subway within a record time of four-and-a-half hours.
The Limited Height Subway (LHS), was constructed between Kothavalasa-Pendurti line in Waltair division of East Coast Railway on April 26, 2017.
The LHS project was sanctioned in April last year, to remove the manned level crossing no. 484 in between Kothavalasa and Pendurti, where four railway lines pass through.
The construction involved the use of base slabs and pre-fabricated boxes measuring 1.5m X 4.65 m X 3.65 m. As many as 16 heavy duty excavators, three heavy duty cranes, five tippers, 1,000 sandbags, four hydra machines, heavyweight jacks and 300 workforces were deployed to complete the project. The passage of trains via Rammurthypanthulapeta was blocked only for 3.5 hours.
“Just after starting the block, the track was removed with the help of cranes and earthwork started from both sides. Simultaneously, the shifting of boxes and plate was done. After reaching the centre, the surface preparation was carried out and base slabs and pre-fabricated boxes were placed using heavy duty cranes.
“While the earthwork was in progress, the boxes were lifted from both sides and placed at the requisite location. The placement of 20 boxes took one hour; for placing of base slabs after surface preparation and linking of tracks, it took 1.5 hours and the total block was completed in 4.5 hours,” a statement from the East Coast Railway said.
The manned level crossing was completely closed in the next 45 days after the approach road was made.
The Waltair Division has completed construction of 17 LHS during 2017-18 fiscal.

Fee kept steady for the past 27 years
It’s rare for a doctor to be known by his consultation fee than the treatment he renders. However, the ‘₹10 doctor’ in Anaparthi in East Godavari district, has earned the name for providing deprived patients treatment for the same nominal fee for the past 27 years.
It was Sathi Suryanarayana Reddy’s father’s dream that he serve the poor. “This is to fulfil the last wish of my father, who passed away when I was pursuing medicine,” he recalls.
Seeing more than 200 patients, who make a beeline for the outpatient department every day, he spends 12 hours in the OPD and reserves another five for medical procedures.
Come weekends or public holidays, Dr. Reddy gives consultation to patients who mostly throng from surrounding villages and towns. Fee for poor patients from faraway villages, who typically spend everything on transport, is exempted.
He was among the first batch of students at Siddhartha Medical College, Vijayawada, and later specialised in general surgery from the JJM Medical College at Davanagere in 1991, when he opened the nursing home in his native town.
Even then, ₹10 was lower than the average consultation fee charged by most doctors. “I preferred not to raise the fee, as I am here not for earnings. With my wife Adilakshmi extending her support, I am able to run the show this way,” he says, smiling.

To promote gaming and designing, a special ‘Designing University’ will be established at Visakhapatnam. The UNESCO already entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the AP Economic Development Board (EDB) on ‘Gaming Digital Learning Hub’, and the representatives from UNESCO met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday at Secretariat, to finalise the project.
The UNESCO team requested Chandrababu Naidu to allocate 100 acres of land for them to promote gaming and digital learning in the State.The delegates explained that future will be on the gaming and the corporate giants like UB Soft, Samsung, Microsoft and others also were ready to establish their offices in Visakhapatnam.
They further explained that within next 10 years, more than 50,000 jobs would be generated in the sector. Out of the total market in the country, AP will capture at least 25 per cent, they opined. Gaming-Digital skill development, gaming-digital teacher training, global certification in digital learning and others will be the part of the hub. Naidu said that AP should lead the country as innovation valley. This would help in building knowledge economy, he added.

Reliance Foundation’s ICT initiative makes visible impact in East Godavari
Bridging the gaps among the stakeholders of the primary sector by making better use of the available Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is what the Reliance Foundation has been doing for the last six years.
From mere double digit, the number of its stakeholders has now touched the one million mark spreading in about 3,500 villages and hamlets. Launched as a pilot project in East Godavari district in 2012, the services of the foundation have now expanded to all the 13 districts of the State.

“We have been serving farmers and fisherfolk by making use of ICT. From providing weather updates and the satellite data pertaining to the potential fishing zones in the Bay of Bengal to arranging interactive sessions with scientists and subject experts in the video conferencing mode are the free services we are providing to the end users now,” says Chittibabu Nagulapalli, senior manager at the foundation.
Be it choosing the right time for plantation and harvest to the advice on the quantity of fertilizer and pesticide to be used, farmers are depending on the foundation’s call centre without any hesitation. Nearly 20% of the beneficiaries are from East Godavari district.

“Video interaction with the veterinary doctors is best among the services being provided by the foundation. Otherwise, it would be very difficult for us to cart the ailing cattle to the doctor and wait for our turn in the queue by postponing the day’s work,” explains Jalligampala Rambabu, who runs a mini-dairy at Kapavaram.
For fishermen, advance information about the potential zones is the major advantage. “It saves time and fuel as well. At the end of the day, we are able to get significant returns from fishing,” says Dooda Masenu, motorboat owner from Uppada. Information collected from the INCOIS is being disseminated to the stakeholders on their mobile phones. “We can also take the help of the call centre during the sudden climate change when we are in the sea,” he points out.
“All we are doing is to ensure coordination among the departments concerned and making better use of the available technology. Officials and scientists too are evincing interest in taking part in the virtual interactive sessions. We are playing the role of the facilitator,” explains Mr. Chitti Babu.

‘Hospital will come up in Amaravati in three phases’
Hindupur MLA and Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital and Research Institute (BIACH & RI) Chairman Nandamuri Balakrishna inaugurated the hospital’s information centre and clinic at Governorpet here on Sunday.
Mr. Balakrishna said that the institute would construct a cancer hospital at Amaravati in three phases. The State government has allotted 15 acres land at Amaravati for the hospital, which is being run on no-profit, no-loss basis. The hospital was offering concessions and free medical care depending upon the financial capabilities of the patients. The institute, doctors and staff work with a motto that the patients should be treated as guests, and instil confidence among them, he said.
According to a rough estimate, of the 10 lakh people diagnosed with cancer every year in India, 7 lakh people die. People tend lose hope as soon as they come to know about their condition. The patients would have to fight for their right to live.
‘Treatment within the reach of the poor’
A wrong impression had gained ground that the poor cannot afford cancer treatment as it was a costly affair. Many philanthropists were supporting the institute in providing medical care to the needy patients. Recently, the Telangana government also waived off the fee collected by GHMC from the institute, he added.
AP Assembly Speaker and former chairman of the institute Kodela Siva Prasada Rao said the hospital set up 18 years ago, has become one of the biggest institutes. The cancer hospital would come up at Amaravati in the next two years, he said.

First of its kind in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
The Da Vinci Surgical Robot is a first of its kind Robotic Surgical System in both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh which helps in detecting Cancer at a very early stage by magnifying the view of cancer affected tissues that would help the doctors to study the malignant effect. The robot, which is comprised of four flexible hands, provides precise instruments that would help in clearing the tumour and damaged tissue.
Surgical system helps perform surgeries without complications
The software of the surgical robot is equivalent to the software which is present in several PCs. It helps the doctors to perform surgeries where minimally invasive procedures are needed which will manage blood loss, pain and fewer blood transfusions.
Human Resource Development Minister, Ganta Srinivasa Rao, inaugurated the system on Friday, April 27. Explaining what the system can do, Managing Director of the hospital, Dr Murali Krishna Vonna said,”We are always in the forefront to introduce new technologies and services in cancer treatments in the state so that the patients belonging to our state do not need to travel far looking for advanced health care services.”

Healing Little Hearts, UK, in association with the Andhra Hospitals, has completed free heart surgeries on 300 children with various complex heart ailments including transposition of great arteries, Tetralogy of Fallot, absent pulmonary valve, double outlet right ventricle, Tricuspid Atresia, Total Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection (TAPVC) and Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD).
Andhra Hospitals Children’s Services chief P.V. Rama Rao told media that the number touched the 300 mark with the completion of 14 heart surgeries performed by a 10-member expert team from from different hospitals in the UK and Italy this week.
Dr. Rama Rao said that the success rate of the Healing Little Hearts teams that have been performing surgeries was “nearly” 100%. He said that teams from UK had come to perform surgeries at the Andhra Hospitals 14 times.
He said that cardiac surgeons, specialist nurses from the Great Ormond Street Hospital, (London), Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Leicester Royal Infirmary, of the UK, S.Orsola-Malpighi Hospital and Azienda Ospedaliera dei Colli Ospendale Mondaldi of Italy performed the surgeries free of cost.
Andhra Hospital surgeons Dilip, Sreemannarayana and Ramesh performed the surgeries along with doctors from UK and Italy, Dr Rama Rao said.
Film star Mahesh Babu who was extending support to Andhra Hospitals visited the children who underwent surgery and at the earlier camps in the Heart and Brain Institute and interacted with them and their parents. Mr. Mahesh Babu was in the city to promote his new film on Friday.

Innovators to get incubation support through licensing
In what could be a boost to startups, MSMEs and innovators, experts in intellectual property rights will set up Novel IPR Academy in Visakhapatnam on Thursday, marking the World IP Day.
With low awareness level on IP remaining an issue, the academy aims at spreading awareness as part of its education and a collaborative platform.
IP owners will be benefited by commercialising their inventions, says Novel Patent Services MD Atti Hima Bindu.
“We are happy to launch the academy as Visakhapatnam is transforming into a major knowledge hub in the country,” Novel Patent Services Managing Director Atti Hima Bindu told The Hindu.
Ms. Hima Bindu was honoured with ‘Exceptional Women of Excellence’ award by the Women Economic Forum at Hague, Netherlands in connection with International Women’s Day celebrations on March 8 this year.
IPR cells
She said the academy, as part of its education vertical, would benefit a wide range of diversified sectors such as students, career aspirants, startups, private and public sector enterprises.
“Educational institutes will be encouraged to open IPR cells to nurture intellectual capabilities of students and promote the creative thinking at all levels. The IP collaborative platform will offer a virtual unison of three verticals viz. research, industry and investments and also provide IP incubation support that will promote IP through licensing or commercialisation aspect and fuel IP-based startups,” she said. Further, the collaborative platform would help researchers understand the needs of industry and focus on industry-relevant studies.

“It will enable IP owners to gain benefit from inventions by either commercialising them or licensing inventions or by supporting them to establish their own firm based on the IP,” she said.
Founder and director of Novel Patent Services, a city-headquartered decade-old firm with clients in various countries, Pattabhi Muralikrishna said diligent and intelligent IP strategy was one of the key aspects for startups as well as for others in a highly competitive world.
“We have decided to inaugurate the academy on World IP Day as it is aimed at celebrating creativity and contributions made by creators and innovators to the development of knowledge societies all over the world,” he said and regretted that many, despite launching of products, were not aware of patenting and trade-marking.

‘It took 45 days to complete the project’
Unlike the normal four-wheeler, this vehicle does not have a clutch or a gear but operates through a switch to move forward and backward and comes with a brushless DC motor sans any noise.
A team of 17 final year students of Dr. Bullayya College of Engineering for Women designed the solar-powered BLDC-driven electric vehicle.
With 50% of the total cost being borne by students and the rest supported by the college management, the four-seater vehicle involved a total expenditure of ₹75,000. The maximum speed of the vehicle is 40 km per hour and can carry 300 kg weight.
“We wanted to bring out cost-effective energy-saving solution and set an example for other students,” says P. Rama Lakshmi, EEE student and meber of the team.
Run by both electric charging and solar power, the eco-friendly vehicle is designed with a power rating of 1500 watts and attached with four batteries of 12 volts each which can be recharged on the go.
“There is so much fun involved in bringing the automobile project into life which was earlier considered to be men’s domain,” says D. Gayatri, another student who was part of the project.
Team work
Giving credit to teamwork, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of EEE G. Anand says it took 45 days for the all-girl team to complete the project under his guidance.
Secretary and correspondent of the college G. Madhukumar says such designs will make students to think innovatively and apply the knowledge learnt in classrooms.
“The eco-friendly four-wheeler can be used as a golf cart or in the railway station to help commute senior citizens and differently-abled or assist patients in hospitals,” he told The Hindu, indicating that the vehicle will be kept on the campus.
