Entrepreneurs must tap into cloud computing

In spite of being a country with a huge market capital, we are not controlling it, says expert
Kiranmai Dutt Pendyala
Kiranmai Dutt Pendyala

People of Andhra Pradesh are extremely entrepreneurship-savvy. It is for the Government to tap into this resource pool and gain maximum leverage, says Kiranmai Dutt Pendyala, AMD Greater Asia & EMEA Corporate Vice-President (HR).

Speaking to The Hindu on the sidelines of a conference on entrepreneurship, she says small start-ups can think of tapping into cloud computing and Internet of Things (IoT), the two most happening things currently.

“For instance in Anantapur district, look at the good work done by the Satya Sai Trust in the areas of education, health and drinking water.”

Ms. Kiranmai straddles diverse roles of designing strategic plans on talent acquisition, talent management and talent development and partners with the Human Resources leaders besides teaching, training and consulting.

Referring to the capital buzz in A.P., she says the aim is to make this place a manufacturing hub “but we need a different set of skills for it which none of the engineering colleges here impart. With the Government planning development of infrastructure on a large scale, there’ll be need for civil engineers and other ancillary units,” she said.

“Development of the ports and the five airports will create jobs. Youth here is technically very smart. But, articulation of speech, exposure and ability to speak up is what they lack.

It’s a typical small-town phenomenon and you find a similar thing happening even in the US; small cities vs. big cities,” points out Ms. Kiranmai.

Gap in demand and supply

Speaking about the wide gap between demand and supply of engineers in the industry, she says “it is because engineering education here is in lecture mode which imparts only passive skills. Students listen and write notes. Their productive skills are not put to use. This way, we are making followers, not leaders,” she rues, and goes on to add: “The need is to challenge the status quo”.

A lot of people here are entrepreneurial, but it is different from the global arena. “Ours’ is a large country with a huge market capital. But are we leveraging that?”

Talking about the new capital, she says it’s a 10-year play. “Vast infrastructure like good hospitals, schools, residential colonies and good roads are what we need to put in place and ask the bureaucracy to move in if we want the industry to develop here,” she says.

The authorities, she opines, should create a consortium and we need to tap into SMEs to have the growth engines started and once that happens, the larger players will automatically enter, she says.

Reiterating the need to make the best of the prevailing climate, she says the industry is very hungry. “After Gujarat, people are looking at Andhra Pradesh and Telangana States in the country. It is for us to find out ways and means to translate the attention into investments,” she adds.

Orthopaedician wins Dhanvantari medal

He presents a paper on procedure to extend tibia bone in treating hip arthritis during APOSA meet

Guntur-based Post Graduate in Orthopaedics, Harshavardhan Surat has won the coveted Dhanavantari Medal, for an innovation in hip surgery replacing the expensive procedure of hip replacement.

Dr. Harshavardhan won the medal at the recently held state conference of Andhra Pradesh Orthopaedic Surgeons Association for his paper presentation on a procedure to extend the tibia bone in treating hip arthritis. “For those suffering from hip arthritis, the usual procedure is to treat it with ‘Milch Batchelor Osteotomy’ in which there is incision of hip joint resulting in shortening of the leg on which surgery is performed. People opt for expensive hip replacement surgery but by extending the tibia bone the operational cost could be saved,” said Dr. Harshavardhan.

He further said that hip replacement surgery would make it difficult for patients to squat and do other works usually in rural households. By winning the medal, Dr. Harshavardhan has emulated his father and noted Orthopedic surgeon Amaranath Surat, who had the medal in 1984 for his paper on ‘Compartment Syndrome.’

Best Poster Award

A case study by a team of Orthopaedic surgeons S. Amarnath, K.R.V. Karthik and S. Harshvardhan on a rare condition, ‘Total tarsal coalition’ won the award for Best Poster Award in the conference.

One can hire bikes on daily basis. GITAM students interacted with the delegates on their 300cc ‘All Terrain Vehicle’, and some   entrepreneurs from Hyderabad were showcasing their apps.

The ‘StartAP Fest’ is a platform for budding entrepreneurs in and around the state to showcase their innovative ideas here. Students have set up many stalls of their companies and are busy in giving wide publicity to their  products.

Isthriwala with a difference

“We have come from Vijayawada. We came up with Isthriwala just four months ago, and this fest is a great opportunity for us to showcase our startup. Generally in other laundry services, they just wash and deliver, but we, in Isthriwala, will deliver clothes in sealed packing, like new clothes bought from a shop. Customers will feel that he has got new clothes each and every time, and their satisfaction is our priority,” said Dhananjayan, a member of Isthriwala, while giving details about the startup.

Organisers of the fest said it’s all about entrepreneurs showcasing their products, and get them promoted. “There is a chance of delegates lapping up their idea and they might enquire about other innovations too. We have suggested to student entrepreneurs to talk to as many delegates as they can during the two-day fest,” said Nikhil Agarwal, CEO of Innovations Society.

There are eminent personalities from India,  Dubai, Singapore, the USA, the UK and many other nations. Moreover, their experience during initial stages of setting up startups and their success stories will  surely stimulate the youngsters, he added.

The stalls set up by entrepreneurs from Hyderabad, Benguluru, Chennai, Warangal, Tirupati and the stalls of locals drew many eyeballs.

Jagoo: Bikes on hire

“We have a website as well as contact number. People can call us anytime and can book bikes,” said SR Brahmananda Reddy, the managing director of another startup Jagoo.

He said there are six types of bikes – Royal Enfield, Apache, Duke, Activa, Pulsar and Scooty Pep– available. One can hire a bike for `250 a day.

He also said that one should have a driving licence to hire bikes. “We launched the company last month and it needs much promotion now, and this StartAP Fest is really helping us,” he added.

Gold knee joint revolutionises replacement surgery

3D gold knee and ePlus poly cover can also enhance longevity, says doctor

Research in total knee replacement surgery has led to gold knee-blended joint with vitamin ePlus poly cover. The Guntur-based Sai Bhaskar Hospitals has successfully operated upon a 65-year-old man, Gopal Rao, and implanted a gold ceramic-coated knee joint.

Managing Director Busireddy Narendra Reddy said here on Saturday that for the first time a vitamin ePlus poly cover with gold plated knee joint, gold femur, was used in AP while it has been in vogue in the USA since July 2011.

“In comparison to other joint prostheses, knee replacement implants, made of cobalt and chromium that continuously release allergenic metal ions, with ceramic surface coating on metallic components has many benefits in reducing both allergic reactions and wear,” Dr. Narendra Reddy said.

The new 3D gold knee and ePlus poly cover can also enhance the longevity and performance in total knee replacement surgery.

The might of the Indian Navy: ENC

Visakhapatnam:

The Eastern Naval Command (ENC) is gearing up for the International Fleet Review (IFR) scheduled for February 2016. About 100 vessels from 50 countries will participate in the IFR.

In fact, the ENC has gained prominence after the Indian government focused on strengthening strategic ties with other countries as part of its ‘Look East’ policy. The defence ministry is also keen on strengthening ENC’s presence on the Eastern Sea Board.

The mega event is likely to catapult the ENC to an envious position in the Naval world. The ENC had come a long way from a small outpost in 1939 to playing a key role in the liberation of Bangladesh in 1971. It is spread across the longest geographical area amongst all the commands of the Indian armed forces. It is also the only one capable of operating nuclear-propelled submarines and plays a major role in providing security to offshore assets in the east coast.

The ENC came into existence on March 1, 1968. The ENC has been safeguarding India’s interests on the eastern sea board. Many vice-admirals of the ENC later served as the chief of Indian Navy.

“Out of 13 major ports in India, seven are located along the east coast. Around one lakh ships cross the Indian Ocean every year and around 70% of petroleum product movement of the world also crosses the Indian Ocean,” Eastern Naval Command chief vice-admiral Satish Soni told TOI.

The command that started with a small fleet now has a strong flotilla, submarine fleet and a powerful air arm, besides a well equipped naval dockyard and other units.

The Eastern Naval Command’s significance has increased after it acquired P8I, the long range maritime patrol aircraft, Advanced Jet Trainers (AJTs) and also the nuclear platform. It is the only command in the Indian Navy that has all these assets. It is also the only command with a facility for submariner training and shipwright school. The command has a strong air arm and three air stations – INS Dega at Visakhapatnam, INS Rajali at Arakkonam and INS Parandu in Tamil Nadu.

The ENC, which had 30 warships in 2005, increased its total fleet strength to 52 vessels by 2012. Among its capabilities, it has the INS Jalashwa, an amphibious transport dock, Rajput class destroyers, Kora class corvettes, Godavari class frigates, Shivalik class frigates, Sindhughosh class submarines and the Akula-class submarine INS Chakra. Naval aviation is provided by Sea King Helicopters. Another ship of Khamorta class – the INS Kadmatt – will be commissioned next month, sources said.

The ENC also played a major role in naval operations during the Indo-Pak War in 1971 and in Operation Pawan, which was undertaken by the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) to take control of Jaffna from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

Arthroscopic Surgery Performed by Vizag Steel Docs

Visakhapatnam :

In a rare achievement, the doctors of Vizag Steel General Hospital have performed arthroscopic surgery (keyhole surgery) without opening the joint to fix fractures within the knee joints (Tibial Eminence Fractures) on two patients. G Venkateswara Rao, a senior most surgeon in the field of arthroscopic surgery and sports medicine at the hospital, led this technically demanding and challenging task.

In a release, Venkateswara Rao said that some fractures within the joints are treated by putting a plaster cast or through surgery carried out by opening the entire joint through incisions which are 10-15 cm long. However, Venkateswara Rao used the state-of-the-art arthroscopic equipment, and performed the ‘ACL Avulsion fixation and ACL pull out repair’ with 3-4 stab incisions of less than 5 mm. “Special Titanium screws and suture material were employed to prevent complications such as stiffness and infection,” he said.

The convalescence period of the two patients was reduced to two weeks each as against two months under the general method. Venkateswara Rao said such advanced methods could be adopted due to the state-of-the-art equipment available at Vizag Steel General Hospital. On the occasion, the officials of Vizag Steel expressed happiness at the success of this advanced operation technique.
