Success story : Godavari US- Taking South Indian food global

Godavari US- Taking South Indian food global
Godavari US- Taking South Indian food global

When Kaushik Koganti and Teja Chekuri began the first branch of the now renowned chain of restaurants, Godavari, in the US, little did they imagine that just like the river Godavari, their growth would be a full flow, moving ahead making massive strides cutting across various places. What else could be said about such a humongous growth for a food chain started by two Indians with the only dream to give South Indian food a global identity?

Having started off in May 2015, when they setup their first restaurant in Boston, Massachusetts, little did the duo think they’d move to such a strength so soon and would establish 25 in total, in a period of fewer than three years. In a major development and milestone of sorts, they are celebrating the opening of their 25th story at Houston.

Kaushik, 31, recalls how it all began.

“When I had come to the US to pursue my masters degree in 2008, I obviously craved Indian food. However, I realized that there was a limitation in terms of flavours and that everyone compromised on spices in a bid to westernize the food. I always was keen on the dining business and I thought there was no better way than this,”

he shares. Interestingly, he also realized how the food of Andhra (and now Telangana too) was majorly limited to “Hyderabadi biryani”. “It sure is amazing food. But there’s a lot more to the flavours here and we wanted to bring that to the fore,” he tells us. In fact, the reason they chose the name Godavari was to Stay away from traditional names which are found at several places in the US.

In fact, even though the fathers of both Kaushik and Teja (35), who hail from Vijayawada, are friends, the duo didn’t quite know each other well at all till they landed in the US. “I liked his enterprising nature and discussed with him soon after the idea cropped up in my head. We had no second thoughts and had to jump in soon after,” shares Kaushik, adding, “I left my IT job overnight to pursue this dream, and today, I cannot be happier about that decision because the biggest pleasure comes every day when we hear of how over 10,000 people have dined at our restaurants almost on an everyday basis. There’s nothing more beautiful than giving the pleasure of good food to someone.” Today, Teja has moved back to India, while Kaushik handles the operations in the US. However, he tells us that Teja is at the helm and handles most financial matters. “He has been in the business for long (he owns the well-known brewery Prost that has branches in Bangalore and Hyderabad,North face real estate, Iron Hill brewery amongst other enterprises) and has massive experience which is a boon,” Kaushik says.

Though they are at a very important brink at the moment, when they started off, they didn’t expect such a massive growth. “Yes, we always wanted to go global. Godavari isn’t just for people in the US. In fact, our next branch is going to open in Muscat. We want to take authentic South Indian flavours global. We have realized that when there’s talk of food from the south of India, the menu is quite limited but we wanted to go far and beyond. But we didn’t think the growth would happen so quick,” he states.

But the journey here, though rosy at the outset, wasn’t quite easy. “The major challenge was finding skilled labour. It’s not easy to find people who can make this kind of food in the US. It has been quite a task that way. However, we were clear about one thing, we bring our customers the best of local food, something they’d get on the bandis on streets in India but with high quality. Flavours of the underdog and quality of the five-star hotels was our aim,” shares Kaushik.

However, when franchises come into the picture, it can get tough to maintain quality. “I agree. And that’s why when we decided to start off with franchises, the first thing we did was make things more structured. The chefs are trained in Boston beforehand and we want a uniformity in the way food tastes at every place. We take criticism seriously, and any feedback is discussed with the branch. Owners of our franchises have been very supportive in this journey,” he avers, elaborating that their aim was to always appeal to the westerner as much as the Indians.

“Indians would eat the food, no doubt. But we wanted others to taste our food in its authentic tastes. Indian food is spicy, and we do not want to subtle down flavours, just to suit them. Authenticity is our USP,” he says.

Meanwhile, the team of Godavari pride themselves on being “youngsters with a vision”. Kaushik elaborates, “We understand the importance of marketing and have gone all out in that area because that’s how we’d be able to reach out to people. Being savvy has helped us come up with innovative ways to tell people what we do. Jaswanth Reddy, Varun Madisetty, Sivam Shankar and Uday Gummakonda have all been major players in our growth and what we have managed to do today wouldn’t be possible today without their support.”

Therax Portal helps physiotherapists to share home exercise programmes with patients

A neuro physical therapist from Guntur has won the National Geographic Chasing Genius Challenge in the U.S. for designing a web/mobile application that helps patients with home exercise programmes in their native language.

Dr. Asha’s web application — Therax Portal — is now helping physiotherapists to prescribe, customise and share home exercise programmes with their patients in their native language.

Thousands of people living in rural areas across the world now use the app to get access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation exercises. In places where there is no internet facility, people are taking printouts of the programmes. “People in rural areas are forced to travel long distances to get quality treatment, and by using the application, they can do the exercises at home. The exercises can be modified by their physiotherapists during check-ups. I have watched my grandparents struggle to get access to effective rehabilitation as they were living in rural areas in India,” Dr. Asha said.

The Natgeo challenge is part of a marketing strategy to popularise a television series — Genius — and rewards innovative ideas. Participants have to create a one-minute video about an idea they had to solve a problem using wireless connectivity. Over 1,050 entries competed for the award, and of them, 10 ideas were considered for final round held in March and the winner was chosen based on votes through social media platforms such as Facebook.

Dr. Asha entered the competition with an idea, “Empowering Telerehabilitation with digital connectivity”, and stood out as the winner. She is at present residing at Philadelphia in the U.S. where she works at Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital. Daughter of former principal of Government College for Women, Guntur, Gummadi Narayana Rao, Dr. Asha graduated from Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences, Tirupati, and later moved to the U.S. to pursue Master of Science in Physical Therapy at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston.

He now focusses on telemedicine centre in native village

In 1959, Dr. Kakarala Prasad, son of K. Bhaskara Rao and Venkata Subbayamma, passed out of the ZP High School Vennanapudi, which hardly had basic infrastructure, with a Secondary School Leaving Certificate.

Fifty-nine years later, on Monday, Dr. Prasad, a native of Ramapuram (now Venkata Raghava Puram, also birthplace of legendary actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao) was at the same school in the neighbouring village interacting with the students and the staff. It is now a “Success School” and offers Telugu and English mediums of instruction. The school is all praise for the veteran doctor because of his contribution to its development over three decades.

The school has buildings for classrooms, kitchen and laboratories and even a newly inaugurated cycle stand developed with his contributions.

It is the first school in the State to get G+1 building with the contribution of Dr. Prasad under Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s Janmabhumi programme in 1998. The school, named after his father, was inaugurated by Mr. Naidu.

Much before that, Dr. Prasad, who has been practising in the U.S. for the past 41 years as paediatrician, gave away his five-acre land and house in Ramapuram for a clinic developed by him. The clinic was later upgraded as Primary Health Centre by the government and is still the only healthcare solution for many villages nearby.

“This is an addiction. Once you do something for your village you feel like doing more and more of such activities,” Dr. Prasad sums up about his service. He also funded road development and sanitation projects in Ramapuram.

At 74, he came all the way from the U.S. to visit the PHC to inquire about the infrastructure required for setting up a telemedicine centre.

“It was my friend Bhanu Prasad who introduced me to the joy of helping others. When we were studying in Vijayawada, we gave free food for engineering students. Now we [friends’ circle] are running a charitable trust in his name that has a fund of ₹50 lakh,” Dr. Prasad says.

“In a bid to give back to my village, I paved the way for the clinic. Now I am going to meet the Health Minister to seek help for a new building for the Kakinada government hospital which has become congested. The alumnus of the Rangaraya Medical College (RMC) are ready to fund half of the ₹40-crore project,” Dr. Prasad, who graduated in medicine from the RMC, says.

Dr. Prasad is also involved in philanthropical activities in Ohio where he has been living for the past several decades.

Apart from voluntarily teaching paediatrics at the University of Toledo, Dr. Prasad also provides scholarships to students there.

His services were recognised by the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) recently and he received the prestigious Dr. Guthikonda Ravindranath Award for Community Service through initiatives like Adopt-a-village, Adopt-a-child and others.

His wife Uma Devi and children also joined him in the development of the village. The PHC in Ramapuram does not have a resident doctor since long and telemedicine centre is seen as a solution to the problem.

This Telugu man wants to make madison as no.1 small city in America

HanuANDHRA31may2016

Hyderabad  :

From Karlapalem to Madison, his journey as a leader is awe inspiring. Whether it is at college or job or business or now in American leadership, Hanu has always been in the forefront and proved that integrity and honesty pay off. As Hanu Karlapalem gets busy with his work for the upcoming polls, he gets talking.

“Madison, Alabama is my home. I have been living here for more than 16 years, the longest I ever lived in any city. This city gave me so much. Now it is my turn to give back”, says Hanu who clarifies his intentions to not politicise his leadership.

“I am not a politician, but I am a visionary and a leader.  I do not want any political affiliations for now.  So, my choice is to be the CEO of the city and work towards its betterment. Thus, I decided to run for the office of Mayor and serve the people of Madison, Alabama to create positive long term sustainable results”, says Hanu, who hails from a Karlapalem, Guntur district.

“Karlapalem is my last name too. We are six siblings and our parents made sure we had quality education. My father was well respected as a principal, mathematics teacher, farmer and investor”, he adds.

Hanu is a graduate of Delhi College of Engineering and pursued MS in University of Alabama, Hunstville. After his graduation and before moving to the USA, Hanu established a business in air ionisation and air purification systems, industrial and commercial lighting and oil reclamation in Hyderabad during early 90s. “I lived in Hyderabad until I moved to the USA. I had branches of my business in Visakhapatnam too. But I had to wind up everything as my wife and I decided to move to the USA”.

“Even before I moved to the US, one of my dreams was to study at a university in the US and receive a Master’s degree. I can happily say that I achieved that dream through my wife, Vidya’s support.

“We have been married for 21 years. We have no children, but we devote as much time as possible in supporting many causes that help under-privileged children. She works for a global company and is my pillar in this journey”.

Currently he is busy with informal personal meetings. “We attend Yard sales, events and interact with the public and tell them about my campaigns. People have started recognising me and often tell me that they see my signboards. We also have social media activities where we interact with the citizens. I have campaign staff who work for me,” he adds.

When asked about his motivation to become a leader, “In my fifth grade, I stood first in my class. My father appreciated me. But he said something that still motivates me. He told me that, I am a topper in just Karlapalem. Once, I step out of this village, I will see more competition and more responsibility. Winning outside is also essential. These words still remind me the high standards that my father set for my life,” he reminisces.

About his political journey, Hanu agrees that it is not easy for an Indian American to run for office and be at the forefront of the US politics. “I must say, I have been getting a lot of support and encouragement from people of Madison. That is my driving force”, he adds.

Hanu’s vision for Madison is to become the ‘Number one Small City in America’ that boasts vibrant economy, fosters small businesses and innovation, creates business and job opportunities, and provides high quality education. “My plan is to provide VALUE (Vision, Accountability, Leadership, Unity, and Ethics) and put the city on the path to become number one Small City in America. I am proposing Start Up Madison (SUM),  transparency portal with open data policy for open government, Vision Board, Veterans Support Board etc,” shares Hanu.

“More than me, I think Vidya is sacrificing a lot to support me in the election process. I have to sacrifice my business income, but if I am elected I will receive salary as the Mayor who is considered as a full time CEO of the city,” he adds. Hanu is confident that if he is elected, he will be a proactive, communicative, innovative and inclusive Mayor that people will appreciate.

Naidu declares open Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu Corporation

Andhra Pradesh has thrown its doors wide open to the Telugu diaspora and is all set to embrace the community with open hands.

The Andhra Pradesh Non-Resident Telugu (NRT) Corporation was formally declared open by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu here on Wednesday. He also launched the corporation’s website and mobile application.

Endowed with rich resources, both economic and knowledge, the Telugus have always been in the forefront to contribute to their motherland.

While the Janmabhoomi programme, during the previous TDP regime, proved to be a success in roping in the NRIs, the present regime had come up with new, transparent, adaptable, and a predictable platform so that the system functioned within the governmental framework.

Support assured

Mr. Naidu assured all help from the government for the non-resident industrialists and entrepreneurs coming forward to invest in their State.

He expected the smart village programme to get the much-needed shot in the arm with the involvement of the NRTs.

Mutually beneficial

Ministers Bojjala Gopalakrishna Reddy (Environment and Forest), P. Narayana (Municipal Administration), and Ganta Srinivasa Rao (Higher Education), and TANA office-bearers Satish Vemana and Jayaram Komati hoped that the corporation would act as a mutually beneficial platform to facilitate cultural exchange between the State and its citizens living outside.
