The State government has decided to celebrate the birth and death anniversaries of great personalities as State festivals.
Birth anniversaries of Ballari Raghava (August 2), Tripuraneni Ramaswamy Chowdary (January 15) and Puttaparthi Narayanacharyulu (March 28) will be celebrated.
Likewise, death anniversaries of Uyyalawada Narasimha Reddy (February 22), Alluri Seetharama Raju (May 7) and Potti Sreeramulu (December 15) will be observed as State festivals.
According to the orders issued on Thursday by Secretary (GAD Political) N Srikanth, the celebrations and observances will take place at the Secretariat and at all government offices. The regular budget will allocate funds for the celebrations.

Doctor made chief of APTS, which carries info on clinics and schemes to rural lives
Bottles of intravenous (IV) fluid dangle from tree branches at the hospital of Manne Ravindra in Yerragondapalem in Prakasam district, from where patients, mostly tribals, throng the facility whenever in need of treatment.
In recognition of his services to rural lives for five decades, the State Government has appointed Dr. Ravindra, a product of the Guntur Medical College, the Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh Technology Services (APTS).
Thanking Chief Minister N.Chandrababu Naidu for reposing faith in him, Dr. Ravindra told The Hindu that information and communication technology would be effectively used to the improve living condition of tribals cenchus and sugalis in western Prakasam as their health status continued to be a cause of concern.
The APTS would help relay information on public health centres, special schemes and bridge the gap between health providers and rural communities, he said.
Dr.Ravindra, a Zilla Parishad member, saidAPTS would turn rural youth into rural techno-entrepreneurs.

Rajamahendravaram known as the cultural capital of Andhra Pradesh. It is known for its old traditions, culture and practices. The Rajamahendravaram Municipal Corporation (RMC) is taking steps to restore the past glory of the city and develop it as a tourist destination.
The civic body has prepared a plan with an estimated amount of `40 crore to protect Rajamahendravarm’s cultural heritage. of the historical town, named after Raja Raja Narendra around 1,000 years ago. They planned to develop the old municipal corporation building as a monument and museum. This building was constructed during the British period. In this process, Kambala cheruvu and Dr AB Nageswara Rao parks have been developed by providing infrastructure facilities like walking track, play area for children and gymnasium among others.
As per the information provided by municipal authorities, Kotipalli area, visited by Mahatma Gandhi on April 6 in 1921, and Devi Chowk which was called as Lantern street. People used lanterns to decorate the street to welcome Vizianagara Kings and hence the name for the area.
Havelock Bridge
The construction of this bridge started on November 11, 1897 and opened for traffic on August 30 in 1900. The bridge was named after Sir AE Havelock, the then Governor of Madras. As it passed more than 100 years, this bridge named was decommissioned in 1997. This bridge was being converted as a walking track across Godavari river
Town Hall
This is a cultural centre of yesteryears built by great social reformer Kandukuri Veeresalingam in 1891. He fought for widow remarriage and education for women. He was considered as the father of renaissance in Andhra. The Town Hall is now in bad condition and the District Collector has sanctioned `65 lakh for renovation so that it can be used to hold cultural events. These apart, there are many places worth a visit, including Kotilingala Ghat, ISKCON temple, Damerla Rama Rao Art Gallery, Rallabandi Subbarao Museum, Pushkar Ghat and the like.

The contingent of 116 cadets from Andhra Pradesh & Telangana NCC Directorate bagged the fifth position amongst the 17 directorates that participated in the Republic Day camp at New Delhi from January 1-30.
The contingent also got the following medals and trophies: All India best cadet senior division (Navy) 2nd position to Cadet B Shanmugam; All India best cadet junior division (Navy) 1st position to Cadet Shaun Jimmy and All India best girl cadet trophy in horse riding to Cadet PT Sri Rakshitha. Cadet Harshita Jain was adjudged the ‘Best NCC Cadet’ for 2018 and was presented the Col. Choudhary medal.
The contingent also bagged the runner up trophy in national integration awareness programme and Directorate General Horse Riding trophy. Air Commodore NN Reddy, deputy director general of NCC Directorate AP & TS, presented medals and trophies to the cadets on Tuesday.

The Kondaveedu Heritage and Cultural festival would be held in a traditional manner at Kondaveedu Fort on February 9 and 10. Construction of the ghat road to Kondaveedu Fort was recently completed to help people visit the fort. Modernisation and repair works will be carried out in the fort soon. Helicopter ride, paragliding, hot air balloons, trekking and food courts will be on offer to visitors during the two-day festival. Dance and music shows reflecting the rich heritage of Kondaveedu dynasty would be showcased in the fort.
Kondaveedu Fort Development Committee convener K Siva Reddy said the State government has sanctioned Rs 3 crore to conduct the festival at Kondaveedu Fort and Rs 4 crore for lighting on the hilltop. He said the 5.1-km-long ghat road (with 17 ‘U’ turns) has been completed.
Reddy said the fort would be renovated with Rs 12 crore and a road would be laid to reach entrance of the fort at a cost of Rs 11.70 crore. The ancient damaged Swamy Lakshminarayana Temple would be renovated at an estimated Rs 75 lakh, while Rs 2 crore has been allocated for construction of a children’s park and for developing the small ponds on the hilltop, he added.
Forest Minister Sidda Raghava Rao and Civil Supplies Minister P Pulla Rao said, “The government was developing the Kondaveedu Fort at an estimated cost of Rs 87 crore; we are making efforts to complete it (the task) before deadline as per Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s directions.”

Veteran doctors at a reunion in Vijayawada on Saturday.
The 1958 batch of the Guntur Medical College (GMC) met for a fond reunion at the Haritha Berm Park here on Saturday.
There were 120 students in the batch, but only 50 of them could make it for the batch reunion. Dr. Janardhana Reddy, a surgeon in the U.S. and Mangaraju, an orthopaedician also settled in the U.S,, flew to India just to attend the gathering. Vijayawada-based ENT surgeon C.V. Ramana Rao and Guntur physician K. Vasudeva Rao welcomed their classmates.
“Initially, we used to meet every year and then the meetings were held once in two years because some of the batchmates migrated to other countries,” Dr. Ramana Rao said. The batch will meet again in two years, Dr. Ramana Rao said.

The board funded a research project for use of solar energy to cure tobacco crop by CTRI at a cost of Rs 35 lakh.

The Tobacco Board has announced awards to best growers, exporters, traders, and best employees as part its 42nd Formation Day celebrations at Guntur.
Addressing a gathering on Friday, board executive director and chairperson K Sunitha said natural farming way in Flue Cured Verona (FCV) tobacco cultivation was taken up for sustainable tobacco production in the current season. Land has been taken by the board to conduct trials, he added.
The board launched massive campaign for control of pesticides and its residues on the plant to ensure pure tobacco without non-tobacco related material (NTRM), pesticide residues to improve production integrity, she added. The board funded a research project for use of solar energy to cure tobacco crop by CTRI at a cost of Rs 35 lakh.
Sunitha said, “Tobacco Board’s Growers’ Welfare Scheme is an initiative aimed for welfare of tobacco growers and their family members. Under the scheme, the board has created a Tobacco Board’s Growers’ welfare fund.

Marking a historic day in the annals of Judiciary in Andhra Pradesh, Justice Chagari Praveen Kumar was sworn in as the first Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court in Vijayawada by Governor ESL Narasimhan on Tuesday. Thirteen other judges were also administered the oath of office on the occasion.
Later, the AP High Court, temporarily being housed at Chief Minister’s camp office in Vijayawada was inaugurated by Supreme Court Judge Justice NV Ramana and Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Justice of AP High Court Justice Chagari Praveen Kumar observed that with limited resources available at this stage and with some teething problems likely to come up during functioning of the High Court, which everyone has to face. “With your cooperation, we will march ahead. Our aim would be to take this institution to such heights that it would proud off in years to come,” he said.
He said Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi sent a note of appreciation lauding the efforts of Justice NV Ramana in establishing of High Court in Andhra Pradesh. On the occasion, he lauded the efforts and vision of Chief Minister for the new capital city, where Justice City will be coming up, which will be the ultimate seat of High Court in the state.
Justice Praveen Kumar on the occasion noted that that ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort but where he stands at the times of challenge and controversy. “Now is the time to deliver and now is the time to act,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu described it as a historical occasion and urged the Judges of High Court and other legal functionaries to bear with the inconvenience for some time as the transit High Court building in Amaravati will be ready in another three weeks. He observed that with shifting of High Court, the physical transfer of institutions has completed.
“We have to cooperate and strive together to make Andhra Pradesh High Court, the youngest High Court in the country, best in the Country,” he said. The Chief Minister also praised the efforts of officials for reading the temporary accommodation for the High Court in short time of four-five days.
Supreme Court Judge Justice NV Ramana said the new transit High Court building will be ready by January 21 and Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi will participate in its inauguration. He described the High Court of Andhra Pradesh functioning from Vijayawada today as a momentous occasion.
He recalled the comments of Justice Koda Subba Rao during the inaugural of High Court of Andhra at Guntur on July 5, 1954, and stressed the need of everyone to raise up to the occasion and prove them qualified to enhance the image of the High Court.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu set the ball rolling for the construction of the permanent Secretariat and Heads of Departments complex by laying the raft foundation at Kondamarajupalem on Thursday.
The event marks a major milestone in the capital city project a few months ahead of the general elections. The complex, designed for four towers of 40 floors each and another with 50 floors, will be the first permanent structure in the administrative city in 1,375 acres.
A massive 57,000 cubic metres of concrete will go into the foundation for the towers, the tallest of which will rise 225 m. The uniqueness of the foundation is the that entire volume of 11,000 cubic meters of concrete per raft would be poured non-stop for 72 hours. A raft foundation comprises large concrete slabs evenly spread under the entire buildings against the conventional strip and trench footings. The project cost is estimated at ₹3,500 crore and is being implemented by L&T, the Shapoorji Pallonji Group and the Nagarjuna Construction Company.

Conducts grand finale of contest in run-up to ‘Jnana Bheri’
East Godavari district Collector Kartikeya Misra donned the role of a quizmaster to make youngsters aware of the importance of getting enrolled as voters. He conducted the grand finale of the quiz competition conducted in the jam-packed Ambedkar Auditorium on Friday in run-up to the ‘Jnana Bheri’ programme scheduled for December 22 here in which Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is to interact with the students of different educational institutions.
Seven teams, each consisting of two members of representing one revenue division each, took part in the grand finale that lasted for about a couple of hours. Along with students, parents and teachers, officials of all the government departments and elite from the city formed part of the audience. The quiz is all about the Indian Constitution with special reference to the right to vote. Questions on history and cultural heritage were also asked.
The first round consisting of general knowledge while the second one was about elections and the third round was on Indian heritage. The participating teams were given a chance of choosing a particular topic from the given list for the fourth round and the audio, visual questions find place in the penultimate round. It was the rapid fire round that selected the winners for the first and the second places.
Selection of winning team for the third place became another challenge with three teams vying with one another by scoring equally. The quizmaster opted for the tie-break and announced the winning team for the third position. Mr. Misra handled the quiz in a professional way and tried not to imitate the professional quizmasters. Besides highlighting the importance of casting the vote in between the rounds, he also elaborated a few points related to the quiz questions.
Winners
Team consisting of Prasanth Patel and P. Sameesh from Bhashyam English Medium High School, Ramachandrapuram won the first place, while G. Sai Abhinay of Suryadeep English Medium High School and Yamini of Government Junior College, Gokavaram, representing Rajamahendravaram team stood in the second place. O. Bhavani and P. Nagachandra Poorna from Chebrolu Zilla Parishad High School representing the Peddapuram team won the third place.
Trophies and prizes were presented to the winners.
