Vijayawada:

Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu was sworn in as the first Chief Minister of new Andhra Pradesh at a function at Nagarjuna Nagar, 18 kms from on Sunday.  Governor E S L Narasimhan administered the oath of office and secrecy to Chandrababu at 7:27 PM, the auspicious “muhurtam” set for the occasion.

Several Union ministers, Chief Ministers of various states and senior leaders of BJP attended the swearing-in ceremony. Naidu took oath in the name of God in Telugu amidst thunderous cheers by party workers.

Some ministers were also sworn in on the occasion. Chandrababu paid obeisance to the statue of Telugu Talli (reverential mother of Telugus) on the dais before taking oath.

Braving the blistering heat, lakhs of people attended the unprecedented grand ceremony on a sprawling 70-acre open site opposite Acharya Nagarjuna University. Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, M Venkaiah Naidu, Ananth Kumar, Kalraj Mishra, Prakash Javadekar, Nirmala Sitharaman attended the function.

Chief Ministers Parkash Singh Badal of Punjab, Manohar Parikar of Goa, Vasundhara Raje Scindia of Rajasthan, Raman Singh of Chhattisgarh, T R Zeling of Nagaland were also present along with senior BJP leaders L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and several others.

Art of Living guru Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, badminton star Pullela Gopichand, top industrialists like G Mallikarjuna Rao of GMR Group and a host of other VIPs attended the ceremony. Chandrababu’s wife Bhuvaneswari, son Lokesh, daughter-in-law Brahmani and other relatives were also present.

Earlier in the day, Naidu paid tribute at the NT Rama Rao Ghat ahead of his swearing-in ceremony. Naidu likely to announce sops for people including rise in pensions for handicapped.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief is the first Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh after the formation of Telangana.  Earlier this week, Naidu had announced that he would work from Hyderabad, putting at rest speculation that he would open a “camp office” in Vijayawada.

Niadu also had to weather some political storms, mostly notably the exit of K Chandrasekhar Rao from the TDP and the launch of Telangana Rashtra Samiti with the only demand for bifurcation of the state.

He had to eventually give in to the separate state demand and alter the TDP’s united AP policy.

In 2009, Chandrababu would have wrested power from the Congress but for the emergence of actor Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) that cut into the anti-incumbency votes and helped Y S Rajasekhara Reddy retain power. Thus, Chandrababu was relegated to the opposition leader’s slot for a second successive term.

He faced the threat of political extinction as nobody gave TDP a chance of returning to power in 2014 in the face of a serious challenge posed by another new entrant YSR Congress of Jagan Mohan Reddy, son of Y S Rajasekhara Reddy on the state’s political scene.

The state bifurcation came as a blessing in disguise for Chandrababu as people saw hope only in him as a tall and “experienced” leader who could recreate the magic and build the new state of AP into a well-developed province.

The 2014 election mandate in Andhra Pradesh was decisively in his favour. And, this will be by far the biggest political challenge for the shrewd campaigner.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Naidu and said that the Centre is committed to extending all possible help to the people and government of Andhra Pradesh.

On Saturday, YSRC Chief Jaganmohan Reddy flayed the “pomp and show” associated with the “coronation” of N Chandrababu Naidu and said he does not want to be part of the “extravagant” swearing-in ceremony when Andhra Pradesh is in deep crisis.

Naidu’s TDP had fought the elections as BJP’s alliance, winning a majority in the assembly elections with 108 out of 175 seats. The party also won 17 seats in the Lok Sabha. TDP is also BJP’s second largest ally in Parliament.

Hyderabad:

Deceased YSR Congress spokesperson, B. Shobha Nagi Reddy, became the first posthumously elected member to a Legislative Assembly in the country.

Ms Reddy won with a huge majority of more than 47,000 votes in an electorate of about 2 lakhs where there are more women voters than men.

Her majority this time is about 10,000 votes more than that she secured when she successfully contested the last time in the by-elections. A re-poll in the segment will now be held in the next few months to elect the next MLA. But, it is unclear as to who would contest on behalf of YSRC.
Riding on the sympathy wave, Ms Reddy’s husband and former MP, Bhuma Nagi Reddy, won from Nandyal, while her brother too tasted victory in Kurnool.

Ms Reddy had died in a road accident in April while coming back to the city, but the EC allowed her to remain in fray.

Man with the Midas touch

M. Rajaiah
M. Rajaiah

Mallineni Rajaiah , who came to Vijayawada with a good luck charm his mother gave him, is now the chairman and MD of Vijay Agro Products Pvt. Ltd. and Taj Gateway Hotel with an annual turnover of Rs. 200 crore

Leaving behind his village Amanacharla in Nellore district, he came to the ‘City of Victory’ in 1968 as an ordinary employee of a private solvent extraction company.

All he had was a Rs.2-coin clasped tightly in his fist, a good luck charm his mother gave him while seeing him off, an abundance of hope and of course, a steely grit to make it big in life.

Meet Mallineni Rajaiah, a prominent industrialist who is credited with placing Vijayawada a notch higher by bringing into the city the landmark Taj Group of hotels –Hotel Taj Gateway. Today, the businesses he is involved in fetch him an annual turnover of Rs. 200 crore. Mr. Rajaiah is the Chairman and Managing Director of Vijay Agro Products Pvt. Ltd. at Enikepadu and Taj Gateway Hotel.

In 1973, he set up his own enterprise. “I burnt my fingers but it did not deter me from making a fresh attempt two years later”.

In 1980, he started a solvent extraction unit and after three years, he launched the agro company. He then gradually diversified his business into pisciculture, cold storage and hospitality sector.

In 2007, the much-awaited Gateway Hotel came into operation. “I bought a site in the heart of the city and wanted to build a landmark structure here. Many friends and well-wishers warned me. But I followed my gut instinct and went ahead and here we are,” he says, letting out a winning smile.

“We are far ahead of others. This is only the beginning,” he says dropping broad hints that he has many more major projects up his sleeve.

Known for being vocal about perennial apathy of the successive governments towards Seemandhra region, Mr. Rajaiah says he is not against the State division. “I resent the manner in which we have been thrown out like an abandoned child. There are several unanswered questions causing a great deal of unrest among people in this region,” he says.

It is a misconception that there is no land available in Krishna district, he argues, informing that there are more than 27,000 acres of forest, temple and government land in East Krishna which can be put to good use.

Mr. Rajaiah foresees a bright future. “We are efficient, hard-working and good entrepreneurs. There is no dearth of aptitude but we need to bring back our youth who are away for want of good jobs,” he says.
