Bangladesh naval ship at Visakhapatnam on a three-day visit

Visakhapatnam, Mar 18 (PTI) :

Bangladeshi naval ship ‘BNS Gomati’ arrived here on a three-day visit to the Eastern Naval Command. Commanded by Commander M Moinul Hassan, ‘BNS Gomati’ is a 1260-tonne ex-Royal Navy ‘Island’ class patrol vessel with a crew of about 100 personnel.

The ship, which arrived yesterday, was received here by officers and sailors of the Eastern Naval Command here. Commander Moinul Hassan called on Rear Admiral Ajit Kumar, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, earlier in the day.

During their stay here, the Bangladesh Navy personnel played a friendly volleyball match with the Eastern Fleet Team. Officers and crew of the ship are also scheduled to visit various places of interest in and around Visakhapatnam before departure on Wednesday, according to a Navy release here today.

Hyderabad’s faithful rejoice new Pope’s election

Roman Catholics in the city have hailed the election of the new Pope, Francis I, from Argentina, the first non-European pontiff in nearly 1,300 years. Special prayers will be held for the man who will lead over 1.2 billion Roman Catholics in the modern world.

Archbishop of Hyderabad Rev. Thumma Bala said, “I am very pleased to express my joy on the election of the new pontiff, Pope Francis I. I extend our cordial congratulations and felicitation to the most holy man.”

Jayasudha, the MLA from Secunderabad, said, “I am glad that this time something different has taken place. After so many years they have elected a Pope from outside Europe. We can only hope for the best and pray for the Pope to continue God’s work and bring about peace in the world, which is most important.”

Father Valentine D’Mello of Holy Trinity Church, Begumpet, said there would be special celebrations and a mass dedicated to Pope Francis.

“We will have special ringing of the bells and we will have our celebrations in the mass. We will be praying for him and there will be a thanksgiving chant after the mass. One of these days, we will be dedicating the whole celebration to the Pope,” he said.

Kevin Michael, a parishioner of John the Baptist Church said, “We are happy since we received the news this morning that we have got a new Pope who is simple, polite and a religious person. We pray for him so that he can lead the church of over 1.5 billion Catholics all over the world, and that he can lead the church forward in the modern world.”

Her Dad was and is her biggest influence and motivator in her life – he is the one who taught her to visualize beyond what is visible to the naked eye. A triple gold medalist in her Bachelors in Computer Science and Systems Engineering, she moved to the United States for her Masters in Computer Science from University of Miami, Florida. married to her wonderful husband Raghav for over 10 years, Satya has an adorable 7 year old, Avinash. Currently she works as a senior software developer for the financial giant Bloomberg LP. 

Satya loves to dance, and enjoys listening to music, socializing and having a good time with family and friends. She volunteers for various charities like Make a Wish foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Feed the Children, Dress for Success etc on the weekends.

Colwyn Bay cricket club choose overseas player

INDIAN allrounder Khatib Syed Shahabuddin will be Colwyn Bay Cricket Club’s overseas player for the new Liverpool Competition season.

Bay, who were relegated from the Premier Division at the end of a disappointing 2012 season, will be hoping the seasoned professional, who has 76 first class matches under his belt, will help them bounce back at the first attempt

The 33-year-old Shahabuddin – known as Shobby – who plays his first class cricket for Andhra Pradesh, has a couple of first class tons to his name while scoring more than 2,500 runs at an average just under 25.

The right-arm fast medium opening bowler also has almost 250 first class wickets at an average of 26.7 while his one-day stats include 60 matches with almost 1,000 runs and 73 wickets at a healthy economy rate.

Shahabuddin, who has also played for Hyderabad Heroes and Mumbai Indians, is due to arrive in the Bay during early May and, as he has a Level 2 coaching certificate, he will be expected to help out with coaching at all levels of the club.

Bay start nets at Rydal School on Friday evening and skipper Paul Jenkins is expecting to have many of last year’s squad available for what is bound to be a crucial year for the club.

Jenkins said: “We have lost one or two players but I am confident that we will have a good squad to pick from when the season starts.”

Two players who won’t be in the Bay first eleven this year are promising young batsman Jordan Evans who will be staying in the Premier Division by joining Firwood Bootle after scoring almost 600 league runs for the Bay last season.

Wicketkeeper and former skipper Graeme Jones will also be playing for Bootle next season, six years after leaving that club to join the Bay.

Bay start their 2013 campaign away at Birkenhead Park on Saturday, April 13, in the Bridging Finance Trophy Group 2 and have their first home game the following weekend against Wavertree.

The club’s first Division One fixture is away at Orrell Red Triangle on Saturday, May 4.

Nizam’s classic Napier cars park at Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad

Napier cars of VI Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan on display at Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad.

The Napier cars were earlier showcased at the Cartier ‘Travel with Style’ Concours D’elegance 2013, a vintage car exhibition, held in Mumbai.

With five such cars, the Nizam of Hyderabad was the single largest owner of Napier cars in India.

The seating of the car is arranged in such a way that the occupants faced the Nizam, who took a central seat in the car.

Emergency angioplasty saves Belgian

Minutes before the Vijayawada-New Delhi Air India flight was to take off from Gannavaram Airport, a 38-year-old Belgian national Vanhaeren Kohn, suffered a massive heart attack, but timely medical help saved his life.

A businessman, who was in Vijayawada to sell his company’s equipment, was on his way to New Delhi and sudden severe chest pain, palpitation left him motionless and identifying the problem, the people around immediately shifted him to the Pinnamaneni Medical College and Hospital in Gannavaram on Thursday evening.

Doctors shifted him to Dr. Ramesh Hospitals, where a primary emergency angioplasty was done in consultation with the family physician of Mr. Kohn back in Belgium. Ramesh Hospitals Chief Cardiologist P. Ramesh Babu said that there was a 100 per cent block in a vessel on the side and they removed it within 25 minutes .

US city delegation on visit

A business delegation from the City of San Antonio, Texas, US, and the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry today signed a memorandum of understanding to increase trade.

Information technology, renewable energy, bio-sciences and clinical research were some of the areas identified.

HEALTHCARE FOCUS

The delegation, led by Councilmember Elisa Chan, will be visiting other cities during the tour and will meet Government officials and corporates.

Chan invited Indian business houses to explore opportunities in the City, especially in the bio-science and health-care segment. “This is today a $29-billion industry in the City, employing over 150,000 people. We also have a sound base in IT services, especially those related to cyber security,” she said.

JNTU Anantapur to tie up with Carnegie Mellon

JNTU Anantapur, is all set to start a new Masters programme in Information Technology starting next year in collaboration with the Carnegie Mellon University located at Pittsburgh in the United States.

Speaking to ‘The Hindu’, the Vice-Chancellor of JNTU-A, Prof. K. Lal Kishore said that the new Masters programme, which has been an integral part of the academics of JNTU at Kukatpally in Hyderabad since the last 10 years, would be a two-year full time programme based completely out of JNTU-A.

Professor Raj Reddy, a senior professor at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), was at the JNTU-A on Monday to discuss the proposal to start the Masters programme from the next academic year besides the intricacies of the programme.

A meeting of the administration along with Mr. Raj Reddy was held at the university going into various details of the programme.

Mr. Lal Kishore, explaining the course structure to ‘The Hindu’ said that the university was aiming to take in close to 50 students as a start. Any student with an engineering degree would be eligible for the course.

However, all such interested engineering graduates would have to pass an entrance test following which they would be put into a preparatory programme followed by an exam. Those students who clear the exam with a minimum of 80 per cent marks would be the ones eventually eligible for the new Masters programme.

Going further, Mr. Lal Kishore explained that the students of this course would be expected to devote a lot of time to their studies as the completion of each subject would mean successfully completing close to fifteen or more modules, for all of which an online test would be held by the CMU.

“Special and dedicated infrastructure would be provided to the students of this programme. Students would also be helped with financial assistance through various banks,” said JNTU-A V-C K. Lal Kishore.

Meanwhile, a special recruitment drive is also scheduled to be held aiming at the successful running of the programme in which existing professors might be trained to teach the students of the programme besides recruit those who had earlier completed a similar programme from CMU.

Earlier, Prof. Raj Reddy was felicitated by the JNTU-A V-C Prof. K. Lal Kishore at the university campus.
