Suven Life said granted claims of patent include class of selective 5-HT compounds discovered by Suven
Suven Life Sciences Limited, a Hyderabad-based biopharmaceutical company, has received a product patent each from Australia, Sri Lanka and South Korea corresponding to the new chemical entities for the treatment of neuro-degenerative and psychiatric disorders.
These patents are valid till 2029.
In a filing to the BSE on Thursday, Suven Life said the granted claims of the patent included the class of selective 5-HT compounds discovered by Suven and were being developed as therapeutic agents and were used in the treatment of cognitive impairment associated with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s as well as psychiatric ones like Attention Deficiency Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and schizophrenia.
With these new parents, Suven has 16 granted patents from Australia, nine from Sri Lanka and 12 from South Korea. These granted patents are the exclusive intellectual property of Suven. Products out of these innovations might be out-licensed at various phases of clinical development like at Phase-I and Phase-II, the company said.

Extending its business base in the district, Amara Raja Batteries Limited group, belonging to the Galla family, announced its expansion by launching the world’s largest integrated medium VRLA plant at Nunegundlapalli near Chittoor on Sunday.
The first factory in the 500 acre land, set up with an outlay of `350 crore, was inaugurated here on Sunday. With an employment generation capacity of 1,500 in the first plant, the plant can manufacture 3.5 million UPS batteries every year, ARBL managing director Galla Ramachandra Naidu said.
“The second plant is under construction and two more plants–one for tubular and other for plastic–will soon commence operations. The second unit, with an outlay of `350 crore, would provide jobs to another 1,500 people,” he said.
Emphasising that the company will focus on employment generation, Ramachandra Naidu said, “Chittoor is enveloped with barren hills. There is no agriculture and only industries here are dairy and poultry. For the economic growth of the district, industries are the only option and we are providing them.’’
Ramachandraiah Naidu said after the completion of all the plants, the company will provide jobs to as many as 20,000 persons.
Speaking on the occasion, ABRL vice-chairman and managing director Galla Jayadev said the UPS batteries cater to the need of industries and can be used domestically too.
He said Chittoor is a strategic location for development of industries. “Every one thinks that Chittoor is not viable as it is far off from the capital, Hyderabad. But, it is a strategic location as it is located three hours away from Chennai and Bangalore,’’ he said.
Jayadev said economic development will increase commercial activity at the place and also nearby towns. “Thanks to our Karakambadi plant, which is providing employment to 17,000 persons, the local economy increased by 30 per cent in Tirupati. Similarly, with a potential of 30,000 here, Chittoor town and nearby villages will develop,’’ he said.
On their future plans, Jayadev said though they have not yet finalised, they are going to invest in other districts including in coastal Andhra and Telangana.
District collector K Ramgopal, Putalapattu MLA Dr Ravi and others also took part.
Galla Aruna Praises YSR
Mines and geology minister Galla Aruna Kumari heaped praises on former chief minister late YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Speaking on the need of industrial development and his family’s contribution to it, Aruna Kumari said it was YSR who took an initiative in the industrial development of the district. “During talks Rajasekhara Reddy offered lands at three different places to us and we selected this one. It was like a forest then and a lot of effort has gone in transforming the area,” she said. Expressing her gratitude to YSR, she said her appreciation should not be politicised.
No to Division
“We are opposing bifurcation and we will continue to do it,’’ she said. Reacting on the reports of the chief minister likely to float a new party, Aruna Kumari said she was not aware of any such move.

The Institute of Management Technology, Hyderabad, announced the one-of-a-kind joint ‘Social Entrepreneurship’ program with Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). The Social Entrepreneurship Program was inaugurated on January 1 and will commence from January 2 and go on until January 18, 2014.
The Programme was inaugurated at IMT Hyderabad by welcoming the students and faculty of SIPA for a Social Enterprise Practicum in India 2014. IMT Hyderabad is hosting this illustrious venture for the second consecutive year. The inaugural ceremony started with a session by G Vani Mohan, Commissioner & Director of School Education, Government of India. With insights on women empowerment, gender equality, social issues she struck a chord with students who were passionate about social issues.
She mentioned about her powerful Social Action Committees which promoted the growth of gender equality thus forming woman warriors. A short film on the developmental activities like Indira KranthiPatham by the Government of India made the students curious about such causes.
Post the inauguration the students left the Campus to go to Bhimavaram and will stay there till January 8, 2014 evening.
On their return, the students will engage in a Social Media Marketing exercise in the neighboring villages, Urban Consulting projects, a lunch and roundtable with Professors from Cardinal Stritch University on Gandhian Philosophy and Bhoodan movement and a Mac Von Debate between Columbia University and IMT Hyderabad students. The joint program will also comprise of shopping and cultural trips to Shilparamam, Golconda and Charminar, an evening with the institute’s cultural club Antragna, pongal, sankranti and lohri celebrations, and client presentations.
Students participating in the program are all Master in International Affairs or Master in Public Policy students at Columbia University in New York.
The course is a design-thinking experiential education curriculum developed to meet graduate student needs and interests in social entrepreneurship and sustainable development in the 21st Century. In addition to multi-media lectures, labs, field work, and site visits, the course curriculum includes a series of applied consulting projects, in which students will conduct short management consulting projects for an Indian social enterprise or organization focused on social entrepreneurship and innovation in social service delivery in a range of sectors.

Joint venture granted approval after hiking revenue share offer

DP World and JM Baxi Group have been selected to build and operate a new 500,000 TEU container terminal in the Indian Port of Visakhapatnam.
The joint venture received approval from the Visakhapatnam Port Trust after the consortium agreed to increase its revenue share offer from 10 percent to 11.04 percent, a port official told Logistics News.
The consortium, already responsible for the day-to-day running of Visakhapatnam Container Terminal (VCT), the port’s first box facility, was the lone bidder for the project, which was offered on a build-operate-transfer basis for a period of 30 years. The new terminal will be built at the site of the existing terminal, which will be see extended to around 850 metres.
“With a total continuous berth length of about 850 metres and water depth of approximately 17 metres, Visakha Container Terminal (VCT) will be able to accommodate bigger ships,” the official added.
Last month, Essar Vizag Terminals, a subsidiary of Indian terminal operator Essar Ports , also entered into a 30-year concessionary agreement with the Visakhapatnam Port Trust for three new iron ore berths at the Indian port.
During the first eight months of fiscal year 2013-14, VCT handled approximately 175,000 TEU compared to the 166,000 TEU handled in the corresponding period a year earlier.

Ajita Suchitra Veera’s short film, Notes on Her, was first nominated for the Oscars in the Honorary Foreign Film Category. This time, the student of St. Ann’s College in Mehdipatnam has her full-length feature, Ballad of Rustom, featuring in the Reminder’s List at the Oscars. With 288 other films from across the world in the best film category, the city girl is likely to be up against Gravity and other noted movies from last year.
It’s an interesting achievement as this is a shortlist of last year’s best films, and it’s not the honorary foreign films category where Indian films normally get nominated,” remarks Ajita, who grew up on World Cinema classics and always wanted to make the kind of films she loved watching.
Her film, she says, focuses on imagination, dreams and a passion for life. “Rustom is a young man from a small town, with very vivid imagination. He does not have a college education but has a great scientific disposition. He is like a village inventor. In the film, he travels, meets people and falls in love with a painter.”
It’s a film about the Indian countryside. And about people like Rustom, who seem ordinary but are so extraordinary,” Ajita explains.
The film has kept her pre-occupied for the past four years.
“It was shot over four months in a remote countryside location in Coorg. I wanted to shoot amid the mist and fog and was very clear on how I wanted the film to look. So the negative underwent a special process known as bleach bypass, wherein the colours are de-saturated and you get high contrast images,” she shares.
In the age of digital filming, she decided to stick to good old 35mm cinemascope.
“So, it’s a ‘big film’ in that sense. I love 35mm because of the certain kind of aesthetics, colours, saturation and light and dark shades, which are important for a film. Digital doesn’t give you that kind of richness. The film has vast landscape shots, mountains, hills and valleys, for which we needed the cinemascope format,” she says.
While Ballad of Rustom has been touring film festivals and winning accolades since 2012, Ajita is still waiting for it to release in India. “At first, I was not in a hurry to release the film because it had already received international acclaim. I wanted the international audience to know that there are Indian directors who are also focused on their craft. Now, I want the film to release here because it’s where I come from,” she says.

Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT) has approved issuing a letter of award to Visakha Container Terminal Pvt. Ltd. (VCTPL) for extension of existing container terminal at a cost of Rs.633 crore.
The proposal was okayed by the board of trustees, which met here on Friday. Kolkata Port Trust Chairman R. P. S. Kahlon, who is holding additional charge as Chairman of VPT, presided over the meeting.
VCTPL, a joint venture of DP World and United Liners Agencies of India (Private) Ltd., had developed the existing container terminal a decade ago under the PPP (Public-Private Partnership) model. It had handled 2.47 lakh twenty-foot equivalent units in the last fiscal. Once the new container terminal is extended, it will increase the capacity by 0.5 million TEU. It is envisaged to increase the length of the all-weather terminal to 850 metres to handle bigger size vessels.
The letter of award is likely to be issued on Monday, VPT sources told The Hindu.
VPT accepted the VCTPL’s revised offer of 11.44 per cent of gross revenue share from the new project for which the concession agreement for 30 years will be signed in the New Year. The project will be taken up under develop, build, fund, operate and transfer (DBFOT) model.
The tender committee set up by VPT under the chairmanship of Chief Engineer Ramachandra Rao opened the price bid on November 18. VCTPL had emerged as the only qualified bidder to submit price bid. VCTPL, which was also the single largest bidder earlier, was not considered by the port for offering just 10 per cent of gross revenue share.
The board subsequently asked all the seven qualified bidders, including VCTPL, Adani, Simplex, Welspun and Leighton, to submit fresh bids.
“We are delighted at the Friday’s decision to issue letter of award in our favour. It will help VPT in facing competition thrown up in handling container cargo by the Krishnapatnam and Dhamra Ports,” CEO of VCTPL Capt. Sriram Ravi Chander said.

The 15-day-long Seva Days of North American Telugu Association (NATA) will culminate with cultural programmes, award of scholarships to students and presentation of lifetime achievement awards at Ravindra Bharati here on Sunday.
A business seminar will also be held in collaboration with Telugu Entrepreneurs Association (TEA).
Justice R Subash reddy of the High Court will present lifetime achievement award to Maxi Vision group founder Dr Kasu Prasad Reddy and NATA eexcellency award to filmmaker Sekhar Kammula. Assembly chief whip Gandra Venkatramana Reddy will be the guest of honour.
Scholarships to 117 Intermediate students of government colleges, five students from each district, will be presented by justice Dr Y Bhaskar Rao, Lokayukta, Karnataka. Each student will be given a scholarship of Rs 10,000.
Seva Days is an initiative of NATA whereby they lend services to people in the state. NATA president Sanjeeva T Reddy told reporters that the association had built water plants in Nalgonda, Nellore, Tirupati, Nizamabad and other districts, taken up six projects of clean and green graveyards in Nellore district and organised eye camps in five districts of the state.
“Through screening, optical wear is provided to children and we identified some more who need surgeries which will be performed in three months,” he said.
The association has spent more than `2 crore on its programmes. Its next convention in the USA in July next.

City archers, known for winning medals at international fixtures, have done it again by pocketing five medals, including two gold medals, at the World Open Indoor Archery championship that concluded recently in Singapore. Archers of Volga Archery Academy in Gunadala also had an opportunity to take part in the indoor format for the first time.
“Both outdoor and indoor formats have different techniques. What matters in indoor is accuracy and velocity of wind will not be a factor. The archers can learn the art of perfect release (of the arrow) in indoor competitions,” says academy chairman Ch. Satyanarayana. He said that the targets are kept at a distance of 18 metres unlike outdoors where the target is placed 50-metres away from archers.
Memorable
For Poorvasha Shinde, the experience in Singapore was memorable as she won gold in the under-16 compound segment blanking an archer from host country 6-0 and bowing out in the quarterfinal in the senior division.
Myneni Sai Charith bagged the other yellow metal in the under-14 compound final taming a Singaporean 6-4, while B. Deeraj in the under-14 compound segment settled for a silver crashing out to a Sri Lankan in the final. K. Venkadadri in the under-12 division and Rohit Manivarma in the under-14 compound segment won a silver and bronze respectively to take the medals tally to five.
“Archers of our academy are regulars at the indoor meets and for the past four years we are sending them to help get used to alien conditions,” says J. Rama Rao, a senior coach.
Before leaving for Singapore, the academy archers helped Andhra Pradesh bag the silver medal in the compound final losing out to Jharkhand in the junior nationals at Assam. Archers are preparing for the senior nationals which are scheduled to be held at Jamshedpur from December 22 to 26.

Hyderabad -born attorney Nandita Venkateswaran Berry has been appointed the Secretary of State for Texas, making her the first person of Indian origin to hold the third top executive job in the southern state.
Announcing the appointment of Berry, 45, Governor Rick Perry called the Houston-based attorney one of the most accomplished in the state. She steps into the office Jan 7.
As the 109th Texas Secretary of State, Berry would also become the state’s chief elections officer; the governor’s liaison on border and Mexican affairs and Texas’ chief protocol officer for state and international matters.
Her office also serves as the formal repository for official and business records; publishes government rules and regulations, keeps the state seal and attests to the governor’s signature on official documents.
Berry has been on the board of several institutions including the Houston Zoo, the South Asian Chamber of Commerce, the Houston Area Women’s Centre, and the Community Family Centre of Houston.
“Nandita Berry personifies what is possible through hard work and dedication in the State of Texas,” Perry said in a release.
“Arriving from India at the age of 21 with nothing but $200 to her name, she worked diligently to earn her law degree and has since become one of the most accomplished attorneys in the state.
“Her work ethic, intelligence and wide array of experiences will serve her capably in her new duties as Secretary of State, and I look forward to working with her to keep Texas the best place in the country to live, work and raise a family.”
“I am truly humbled to follow in the footsteps of Stephen F. Austin, Texas’ first Secretary of State,” Berry said.
“Like him, I came to Texas in search of a better life and the limitless opportunities to be found across our great state. Born in Hyderabad in 1968, Berry is married to controversial radio talk-show host and former Houston city councilman Michael Berry, a conservative with Tea Party links boasting close to 85,000 Facebook followers.
She has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mt. Carmel College, Bangalore. After coming to the US, Berry got another bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Houston.
She got her law degree from the University of Houston Law Centre in 1995, and was admitted to the Texas bar the same year.
Currently, she is a senior counsel with the law firm of Locke Lord LLP, where she practices corporate and securities law as in-house counsel for El Paso Corporation, one of North America’s largest independent natural gas producers.

US web hosting company Fozzy has launched services from a data center in Madhapur, an IT indutry hub of Hyderabad, India.
The host has taken space with CtrlS, an Indian data center provider. The location adds to Fozzy’s existing data centers in Dallas, Amsterdam and Singapore.
Fozzy has placed hundreds of servers in the facility in addition to establishing a dedicated support center for India.
The web host’s pitch revolves around hosting speed as well as VPS (virtual private server) speed. Its VPS services are available on Linux and Windows, but most clients opt for Linux, the company said.
Fozzy also provides a specially tailored Forex VPS solution, which is latency-optimized for Forex traders.
