Students of Kendriya Vidyalaya ,Waltair, have done the school proud by bagging medals in the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sanghatan National Sports meet and also being selected for the Japan cultural exchange programme.
B Tejasri, student of Class XII, has won three individual gold medals in athletics and eight girls formed the volleyball team that won the championships. Four boys were part of the runners’ up team at the Boys Volleyball National Championships. One girl won a silver in athletics, one boy bagged a bronze in athletics and another the bronze in boxing, school principal PK Purohit announced here on Saturday.
Doing the school proud were three students who were selected to be a part of 126-member KVS cultural exchange team visiting Japan under the Japan East Asia Network of Exchange of Students and Youth Programme (JENESYS 2.0).
The three – M Monica Bhavani, K. Tejaswini and M. Manikanta Sai – would be leaving for Delhi on Monday and from there they would be leaving for Japan on a 9-day all-expenses paid tour of Japan.

Offering an array of faucets and showering products for bathroom and kitchen space, Delta Faucet Company launched its first outlet, Celestile Home and Bath Boutique, at Bank Colony on Wednesday. The company has three outlets in Hyderabad.
The outlet will offer innovative products such as faucets that turn on and off at just a touch. The company offers its products in two brands – Delta and Brizo. While Delta caters to premium customer requirements, Brizo products are targeted at high-end market, said Kiran Singh, marketing director, Delta Faucet Company India Private Limited. The price the products ranges from Rs. 16,000 to Rs. 2.5 lakh.

In his maiden visit to the Far East after taking over as chief minister, Chandrababu Naidu will don the role of chief executive officer of Andhra Pradesh in clinching business deals and attracting investors to the state.

There is nothing new in this. Even during his last tenure Naidu played the role of a CEO but what is new is that he has hired leading consultant PricewaterhouseCoopers Pvt Ltd (PwC) to sell ‘Brand Andhra Pradesh’ to the governments and investors in China, Japan and South Korea when he visits these countries in November-December.
Hired at a cost of Rs 47 lakh, excluding applicable service taxes, PwC will in its capacity as Content Developer and Investment Facilitator prepare the ground for the CM’s visit, fix the appointments and sell the state in order to mop up investments. As per the GO issued on Saturday, PwC will bring out an attractive investment booklet for the AP government and prepare an infrastructure opportunities profile of the state. “The Knowledge Consultant Provider will also extend all support for the delegation planning. PwC team members will also accompany the Naidu’s delegation comprising ministers, state government officials and representatives of the industry from the state,” sources in the Naidu government told STOI.
Naidu, who has prepared a massive plan to bring in investments to his proposed industrial hubs and corridors, wants to conduct negotiations with the government and corporate bosses in these countries not like a chief minister of a small state in India but like head of a global corporate brand. “Naidu does not want to depend wholly on bureaucrats, who are known for quoting rules and introducing impediments. The Far East visit is on a business mission, not a diplomatic one which is why Naidu wants to project himself as a corporate personality rather than the political head of a south Indian province,” remarked sources in the government.
A PwC team will shortly be placed at the disposal of the Chief Minister’s Office, the sources added. Given the success of his business delegation to Naya Raipur in Chhattisgarh last month, officials here are hopeful that Naidu’s visit will be fruitful.
Naidu during his first tenure had successfully sold Hyderabad and secured investments from top IT companies like Microsoft that gave a new meaning to the erstwhile Nizam’s city and created a new image. In fact he was the first chief minister to take advantage of liberalization in the 1990s. Other chief ministers – including now Prime Minister Narendra Modi followed in the footsteps of Naidu.

The Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FAPCCI) and the Turkish Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (TICCI) have signed an agreement for the promotion of commercial and industrial relations.
Under this agreement, FAPCCI and TICCI will encourage the exchange of trade missions, supply relevant market information, conduct business match-making and exchange relevant know-how and information for organising exhibitions/trade fairs.
They will also exchange and answer trade/business enquiries, research on trade and investment by providing facilities and business contacts and cooperate in the education and training programs for human resources development.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by FAPCCI president Shiv Kumar Rungta and TICCI president Ersin Karaoglan.
As a result of this MoU, a trade delegation from Turkey will visit Hyderabad in January 2015.

US Consul General Michael Mullins visited the School of Planning and Architecture (SPAV) here and had a discussion on its activities with Director N. Sridharan and his team. He was briefed about the study that SPAV students were doing on construction of capital of Andhra Pradesh and related issues.
On the occasion, Mr. Mullins wished the State all success in its endeavours and promised to extend whatever help the Consulate could for development of the State.
Mr. Sridharan said the institute was contributing to evolve futuristic initiatives in the State, studying coastal areas, doing micro-planning and helping in drawing plans for transportation and logistics, spatial governance, technology, environment, urban and landscape designing, building services, etc. Besides, focus was laid on encouraging local and regional artworks and activities such as Kalamkari and Kondapalli toy making.
SPAV faculty member Aparna Soni that the potential of the region was assessed with the help of a Composite Development Index and key indicators like land requirement, social development and environment and institutions.
R. Kalaiselvi of Department of Architecture presented a broad overview of establishment of a Centre of Excellence that would lend its expertise in sustainable building technologies, spatial governance, designing etc. which were relevant for development of the State.
Another faculty member Raktim Ray discussed the unique features of the region and possibilities for vertical development due to land acquisition related issues.
SPAV Registrar Krishna Mohan, Chief of Political Economic Affairs, Consulate General of the USA Peter McSharry, Political and Economic Associate John A. Mataya and others were present.

Noted writer-cum-actor Tanikella Bharani expressed anguish over the Telugus’ “lack of interest in protecting their own cultural heritage”. Releasing a book written by writer and Viswanadha Satyanarayana’s son, Pavana Sastry, here on Tuesday, Mr Bharani pointed to the way the British converted the birth place of famous English playwright Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon into a heritage museum. The birthplace of great music composer Ludwig Van Beethoven in Bonn was also made into a museum.
The Telugus abroad are also working to protect their native heritage. The tomb of C.P. Brown who compiled a Telugu and English dictionary located in London was being maintained by members of the Telugu Association of London (TAL).
But the same could not be said about Telugu writers and artistes in the State, Mr Bharani said. The need to convert the house of great Telugu writer Viswanadha Satyanarayana into a heritage museum was being stressed since 1999, but no one had taken any initiative for the last 15 years.
Mr Bharani recalled how the paintings of Damerala Rama Rao at the gallery in Rajahmundry were all shifted to a corner by the watchman so that he could use the hall to perform obsequies to his father on one rainy day. The watchman was performing obsequies not only to his own father but to the heritage of the Telugus also, he quipped.
The heritage museums created in the memory of Kandukuri Veeresalingam and Gurajjada Appa Rao were only marginally good when compared to such places abroad. He said, Viswanadha Satyanarayana was a great doyen of Telugu literature and all in the country should be proud to be born in the same nation as him. He recalled how the descendants of another great Harikatha artiste were using the house that was called a museum for selling coffee powder.
The writer’s grandsons Satyanarayana and Manohar said that they would use the house to promote Telugu literature. A photo exhibition and other articles that belonged to the writers would also be put on display at the house, they said.

A team of scientists in the city, along with experts in Andhra Pradesh and Japan, has found that a citric acid-based disinfectant can destroy the chikungunya virus. The chemically synthesised citric acid developed in Japan, has earlier proved effective in killing the human influenza virus.
The team from the department of virology at Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati; Nichi-In Centre for Regenerative Medicine, Chennai and scientists in Japan have tested the disinfectant in the form of granules on chikungunya virus. The team first collected more than 1,000 samples of chikungunya virus and developed and maintained in both human and mosquito cell line. The disinfectant was then tested on these viruses when it showed it can destroy the virus.
Scientists said the application could be on skin or fumigation to bring down the probability of infection even if bitten by a carrier mosquito. D V R Saigopal, professor of virology, SV University, said that the disinfectant, which is an ingredient in several food additives, was developed in Japan 10 years ago. “The disinfectants we get in India are detergent, phenol, foam or alcohol-based and have high toxicity and side effect. This disinfectant is solvent based and our tests showed it has low level of toxicity. It is not only safer but also cheaper,” the professor explained.
Scientists said that the disinfectant is at present approved as a mouth gargle and rinse in Japan and also used by the Japanese railways department as spray in their train coaches during flu seasons. It is also sold with a brand name ‘Clinister’ by a Japanese multinational company.
Encouraged by the positive result, the scientists have decided to approach the Union government with their research work looking for avenues to try it on other viruses. “It can kill the virus in the environment and in the mosquito as well as on the surface of the human skin where there is mosquito bite. It can be used in detergents, fumigant, mosquito repellent and hand wash,” the professor said.
Scientists have also decided to use the same methodology to test it on other viruses like foot and mouth disease virus and dengue virus.

A few farmers in Guntur district are slowly adopting the Israeli farming techniques to grow hybrid saplings, seeds and crops. The Israeli farming technique, which is gaining popularity among farmers helps to increase the productivity using less space as well as less water when compared to that of traditional farming, which is largely followed by farmers.
The techniques can be used to produce anything from seeds to final products like vegetables and fruits.
Kallam Narendra Reddy, a 51-year-old farmer in Penu-maka village of Tadepalli mandal in Guntur district, started to use Israeli farming methods putting aside his two decades experience in traditional farming.
Mr Reddy grows saplings and seeds for variety of vegetables and flowers including cauliflower, papaya, plantain, brinjal, drum sticks, cabbage, tomato and others in his 2-acre land.
“With an initial investment of `12 lakh, I started to grow saplings in the one-and-a-half acre land in two different methods. While one is under nets another is under special poly house,” said Mr Narendra.
Many of my colleagues ventured to start farming in this method but stepped back as there is no support from the government, he added.
Best advantages of growing hybrid crops in trays under the specially designed houses is that productivity could not be affected by the climate and can be grown in any season of the year.
Meanwhile, the state government has no plans to encourage such farmers and provide facilities for them. Farmers have appealed to the government authorities to provide raw materials and export facilities so that more number of farmers can adopt the Israeli technique.
“Though it is one-time investment we have to spend some lakhs to start it. If the government recognizes this method and encourage farmers we can produce more number of crops,” said Mr K. Aadi Narayana, a farmer in Yerabalem village near Magalagiri.

The Andhra Pradesh Government signed a historic MoU with Google here at CEOs’ conclave on Monday to develop Telugu internet and launch a series of initiatives to transform the State into digital AP in a record time.
Complimenting Google for its association, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said digitalisation and internet literacy should be achieved in tune with the speed with which Google functions.
Google India Vice-President and Managing Director Rajan Anandan and Principal Secretary, IT Sanjay Jaju signed the agreement in the presence of Mr. Naidu, Deputy Chief Minister China Rajappa, Ministers Palle Raghunatha Reddy, Ganta Srinivasa Rao, Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu and P. Sujatha.
“We want to become first State to embrace Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of Digital India and set an example to other States to follow. I will personally monitor the progress,” Mr. Naidu said.
Google, a top web property specialising innovative search technologies, which was launched by Stanford PhD students Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, will also connect all women self-help groups through the internet in three years.
The initiatives will include developing Telugu font, keyboards, content and increasing access to government websites and scaling the local language web to throw window of opportunities for entrepreneurship.
As per the MoU, Google will help government make their websites mobile-ready and accessible in Telugu, promote internet safety among children and government officials, improve and get more local language content online and promote digital literacy among women and help small and medium business to gain from the internet economy.

Incheon bronze-medallist accorded a warm welcome
A warm welcome was accorded to teenage archer Vennam Jyothi Surekha on her triumphant return from Incheon after winning a bronze medal in the women’s team compound segment, at Gannavaram airport on Saturday.
On Friday, Purvasha Sudhir Shende of Volga Archery Academy, the other member of the Indian team, along with coach L. Chandrasekhar, arrived in the city.
The medal won by the archers assumes significance, as the city athletes had won an Asian Games medal after a gap of 63 years.
“In the 1951 first-ever Asian Games held in New Delhi, Krishna District’s Kamineni Eswara Rao (90kg) and Dandamudi Raja Gopala Rao (95+kg) won silver and bronze medals respectively in the weightlifting event,” said District Sports Development Officer S. Ramakrishna. Meanwhile, Kethanakonda-based CBR Sports Academy chairman Chalasani Balaramaiah alias C.B.R. Prasad handed over a cheque of Rs. 5 lakh to the eighteen-year-old archer, pledging support for her preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
“This girl faced a lot of hardship to achieve the medal. She is a fine example to modern-day youngsters, as she made many sacrifices to realise her goal with a singular motto. She can make use of my academy for her future preparations,” Mr. Prasad said.
Congratulating Surekha, Gannavaram legislator Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan promised to take to the notice of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu the importance of quality sports infrastructure in Andhra Pradesh.
“Hyderabad was nurtured as an international sports hub during the Afro-Asian Games. We need such a mega event to develop a new sporting culture in Andhra Pradesh,” he said.
Amid ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ slogans, a visibly tired Surekha thanked Andhra Cricket Association, Laila Group of Companies chairman Gokaraju Ganga Raju, Bhima Cements, Nalanda Educational Institutes, Koneru Lakshmaiah University and Vennam Foundation for their supportin helping her realise her dream.
Surekha’s father Vennam Surendra thanked the Archery Association of India for giving his daughter direct entry.
Several coaches, sports administrators, students of K.L. University visited the airport to accord a warm welcome to the medal-winning archer.
