Krishnapatnam Port sets world record in coal discharge

Continuing to maintain its lead, Krishnapatnam port now gains world’s top position in discharging coal

Whether it is the Olympic Games fever or a unique business model, Krishnapatnam port has succeeded in placing itself on the world map. Resolute on setting records, which may be part of its strategy to stay ahead of competition, Krishnapatnam Port, situated on the South Eastern coast of India has set a new world record in the maritime world by discharging 122,247 MTs of coal within 24 hrs using the conventional unloading system in form of advanced mobile harbor cranes.

M. V. Cohiba carrying 161,980 MTs of US coal on account of JSW Steels Limited berthed at the port at 05:30 hrs on August 6, 2012. The cargo discharge commenced at 7:00 hrs and the record was achieved yesterday, August 7, 2012 by 7:00 hrs. The remaining cargo of 39,733 MTs was discharged by this afternoon.

According to the spokesman of the port, this is by far the only record that has ever been achieved in any part of the world. “It is a remarkable achievement considering the port’s previous record that was set a year ago on July 23, 2011 for discharging 106,171 MTs of steam coal as has been recently mentioned in the Business chapter of the Limca Book of Records 2013, which will be out in January 2013.

Earlier Krishnapatnam port hit the headlines few months back having become India’s port with the highest draft, a position it still holds. Currently the available draft is 18 meters alongside the berth and is likely to increase further as dredging for this purpose is on.  Because of its high draft the port was able to accept a vessel with 17.96 meter draft last month which no other port in the country is in a position to do. The traffic at the port has seen a tremendous surge recently as a result of having raised the draft.

The port’s commitment to offering superior customer satisfaction has been widely acknowledged. In this regard it recently won the ‘Non Major Port Award’ at the South East CEO Conclave & Awards 2012.

Notable awards and achievements reinforce the port’s endeavor of providing best business practices in line with the company’s mission and core values. In continually improving and monitoring such performances, Krishnapatnam Port has now standardized its operations and maintenance of the port though an Integrated Management System comprising of ISO 9001-2008 Quality Management System, ISO 14001-2004 Environment Management System, OHSAS 18001- 2007 Occupational Health and Safety Management System and ISO 28001-2007 Supply Chain Security Management System that are certified by Det Norske Veritas.

Krishnapatnam Port Container Terminal, the container business arm of Krishnapatnam Port is already geared to handle new scheduled calls beginning this month. Last month, the terminal added 4 RTGs of Keppel Fels make enhancing the experience for all its patrons. Apart from these facilities, port has also brought in new mini-bagging machines, installed new hopper and conveyor systems in warehouses and built new sidings to handle the bulk cargo at the port.

To support the pace with which the east coast of India is growing, Krishnapatnam Port is being built to create records and offer world-class facilities and infrastructure that is second to none.

London Olympics: Parupalli Kashyap and Saina Nehwal make history

Parupalli Kashyap and Saina Nehwal.

Parupalli Kashyap created history as he became the first Indian male badminton player to enter the quarter-finals at the Olympics.

Indian badminton has become synonymous with Saina Nehwal, but Kashyap too has caught the eye in London, and on Wednesday, he defeated Sri Lankan Niluka Karunaratne 21-14, 15-21, 21-9.

Later in the day, Saina too made it to the quarter-finals of the women’s singles, with a 21-14, 21-16 victory over Jie Yao.

The world No.5 tired out the Chinese-born Dutch by engaging her in rallies and executed her strokes with perfection in a 40-minute match.

After two easy matches in the group stages, it was a good workout for the 22-year-old, who will take on two-time All England champion Tine Baun of Denmark. Baun progressed after her opponent, Sayaka Sato of Japan, retired.

Before Kashyap, the best performance from an Indian man came at Barcelona 1992, when Dipankar Bhattacharya made it to the pre-quarter finals.

“I cannot express how happy I am,” said the 25-year-old Kashyap at the Wembley Arena.

“It was a very tough match, tougher than what the scores suggest. I am happy that I was able to keep my concentration and focus. I never imagined I would be in the quarter-finals of the Olympics. I am still hoping my parents will be able to come and see me play as they are waiting for their visas.”

Interestingly, Kashyap is not too bothered even as he plays World No.1 Lee Chong Wei (Malaysia) next. “Right now I am not bothered about my opponent. It is the quarter-final of the Olympics and things get much tougher from now on,” he added.

In the first game, it was Niluka who raced to a 7-4 lead with some stinging smashes and delectable drops. Thereafter, Kashyap came into his own with powerful smashes to level the score at 9-all before jumping to a 17-11 lead. He eventually won the game 21-14.

In the second game, Niluka did not give up. Realising that the Indian played at a fast pace, Niluka slowed down the game by engaging the Indian in long rallies.

That resulted in Kashyap making unforced errors. Though the Hyderabadi managed to save eight game points, he went on to lose the game 15-21.

There was no mistaking Kashyap’s superiority in the decider. He stepped up the pace with some scorching smashes and was the master at the net. He opened up an 8-3 lead and then sealed victory at 21-9.

I want to be World No.1 shuttler, says Hyderabadi Sindhu

Hyderabad, After Saina Nehwal, another Indian girl is creating ripples in the badminton circuit.

Pusarla Venkata Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian to win the girls’ singles title in the Asian Youth Under-19 Championships.

The 17-year-old Hyderabadi has already set her eyes on the world number one position. “I want to become world number one,” Sindhu told IANS on her return from Gimcheon, South Korea.

The daughter of former volleyball players, who took to badminton at the age of eight-and-half years, has fast climbed the ladder of success thanks to her sterling performances, mostly at the senior level. She currently ranks world number 25, a huge jump from 151 a few months ago.

The World No.2 in the junior ranking defeated Okuhara Nozomi of Japan 18-21, 21-17, 22-20 in the final of the Asian Youth Under-19 Championship.

“I defeated Sun Yu of China in quarter-final. Last year, I had lost to the same girl in the semi-final,” said Sindhu, who turned 17 July 5. Sindhu, who recently completed her Class 12, is the only player since the legendary Prakash Padukone to hold both junior and senior national titles.

Last month, she lost the pre-quarter-finals in Thailand as also in the Indonesian open which Saina Nehwal went on to win.

In 2011, she won three international challenge events in the Maldives, Indonesia and India, and claimed Swiss International title. She was the runner-up in the Dutch open.

For Sindhu, this success has come after a hard work of just over eight years and the sacrifices made by her parents and the help and encouragement of her coaches.

“I was only eight-and-half years when I started playing badminton near my house in Secunderabad. Mohammed Ali was my first coach,” recalled Sindhu.

She then started training at the Lal Bahadur Stadium and later moved to the Pullela Gopichand Academy, where she now practices with the likes of Saina, Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa.

Her father P.V.Ramna was a volleyball player. The Arjuna Award winner is now sports officer in the railways. Her mother also played volleyball.

“Playing badminton was my own interest. My dad didn’t force me to play volleyball or any other game. They left the choice to me and encouraged me a lot,” said Sindhu, who is supported by Olympic Gold Quest, a not-for-profit foundation that identifies and supports Indian athletes.

“Gopichand Academy is located 27 km away from my house but my father was always there to drop me and to take me back home after the training,” pointed out Sindhu, whose family has now shifted to a house near the academy in Gacchibowli area.

For Sindhu, her coach and former All England champion Pullela Gopichand is her ideal.

“It is a fantastic victory. Being the first Indian to win this and also the fact that she is very young, she is a very good prospect for future. I hope this performance will give her more confidence and we will have even more better results in future,” said Gopichand.

“She will be part of the team which plays in Super Series. She is a great potential and not far away from senior titles and big titles. We expect that she will be in top 10 in the coming year,” the Indian coach told IANS.

“Saina is doing wonders at the highest level and someone like Sindhu doing well is very encouraging. It is not very often that we get a chance to get player after player. We have been consistent. It is good that Saina is 22, Sindhu is 17 and both these players have done very well.”

The Gopichand Academy is working on few more players. “We have couple of other young players who are in the pipeline. Hopefully, we will be able to continuously produce those level of players,” he added. (IANS)

Eamcet results: Hyderabad students hog top ranks

Hyderabad:

City students bagged the top ranks in both medical and engineering streams in Eamcet-2012, results of which were released here on Friday. The first rank in medical stream was secured by Vijay Ketan Reddy, a resident of Dilsukhnagar and in engineering stream the first rank was bagged by Chinta Nitish Chandra, a resident of Madhapur. Unlike the previous year where most of the top ranks were bagged by girl students, this year in both the streams just two girl students each secured top ranks.

Out of a total of 2.83 lakh students who wrote the engineering stream of the examination about 2.07 lakh had secured ranks. Out of a total of 90,917 students who wrote the medical examination just about 77,800 students secured ranks.

Counselling for admissions to engineering colleges is expected to start in the third week of July and classes are expected to start by the end of August. Since about 2.34 lakh seats are available in engineering colleges in the state each of the students who secured rank in Eamcet will get a tech seat for sure. However, in medicine with just about 4,500 seats available for 77,800 students the competition for seats will be tough, officials said.

The toppers said that they had secured the best ranks as they had spent 18 hours a day preparing for the test. Medicine topper Vijay Ketan said he decided to opt for the stream against his father’s wish and hence he had to prove his mettle. Ketan’s father, Raghuveer Reddy is an ophthalmologist who runs a private clinic in the city. “He did not want me to become a doctor as my elder sister had opted for the same profession. My family wanted me to be an engineer but my interest was in medical sciences and I followed my dream,” said Ketan who is planning to join Gandhi Medical College. The topper in engineering, Chinta Nitish Chandra said he is interested in computer engineering.

“I have still not decided which college to choose from as I have cleared national entrance examinations as well,” Chandra said.

Interestingly, a majority of the rank holders in engineering stream might not take admissions in city’s engineering colleges and they would opt for IITs or IIITs. Region wise and category wise ranks will be indicated to enable students to know their position in the region’s rank list this year. Damodar Raja Narasimha, minister for higher and technical education released the results here on Friday. With Eamcet going online this year officials had saved much time, said M V Ramana Rao, convener, Eamcet.

India’s Saina Nehwal blasts out double warning

London:

Saina Nehwal has struck stunning form at just the right time ahead of the 2012 London Games where she hopes to deliver India a first Olympic badminton medal.

The world number five followed up victory in the Thailand Open earlier this month with a third Indonesian Open triumph on Sunday. The battler looks more than ever a live challenger to the might of China’s women at the Wembley Arena from late July.

In Sunday’s final, Nehwal saved two match points against China’s latest hotshot Li Xuerui before grinding out another gutsy three setter 13-21 22-20 21-19.

“It was really, really tough,” said Nehwal. “I love the crowd, I love Indonesia. I feel like a champion when I step on to the court here.”

Nehwal, a hugely popular figure in India, was 18 at the Beijing Olympics where she reached the quarterfinals only to lose out in three sets to Indonesian Maria Kristin Yulianti.

“I was so close to it,” she told Reuters in an email. “I should have won that third and final set when I was leading 11-3 but lost it 14-21. Such opportunities do not come every time. I am unlucky in that way.”

Struck Back

The former world junior champion struck back the following year to become the first Indian to win a Super Series tournament when capturing her first Indonesian Open title.

The 22-year-old rates the victory the high point of her career, defeating China’s Wang Lin, who went on to win the world title in 2010.

“It was all the more satisfying in that it was a victory over such a prominent Chinese. It was another three-setter and I won the last two, including 21-9 in the decider.” In 2010, on home territory and once more with the aspirations of the country swirling around her, Nehwal won Commonwealth Games gold, surviving a match point against Malaysia’s Wong Mew Choo.

“It was another odd match,” she recalled. “I lost the first set and I was down in second where it went to a tiebreak but I (survived match point) and won it.

“That made it 1-1 and it relaxed me so much I won the final set 21-13.”

A triumph but not an easy one. “I was tense because of millions of peoples’ aspirations for me,” Nehwal admitted. “But God gave me mental strength and I overcame all the odds to win gold for India.

“That lifted my country to number two in the overall table of medals, a record for India in the Games.”

LOW POINT A year later there followed a low point, defeat in the first round in front of her home crowd in the Indian Super Series.

She acknowledges the burden of expectation is a heavy one as she continues the never-ending battle against powerhouse China, whose women currently occupy the top four in the world rankings

“Yes, it is extreme and particularly on me, all the more so because I want to win and then in turn some silly mistakes occur and I get failure.”

Nehwal is one of an elite set of players backed by Yonex that includes men’s world number one Lee Chong Wei of Malaysia, Denmark’s  Peter Gade and his compatriot Tine Baun, another woman battling the formidable Chinese.

In March, Nehwal lost in the quarterfinals of a glittering All England championships but bounced back the following week to retain her Swiss Open title

“I was cool, relaxed and focused. It was only with victory there that I could forget about the All Englands disappointment.”

Despite her stellar June, a tough challenge lies ahead for Nehwal but the hope is constant as Wembley looms. “My dream is to win a medal for India in badminton,” she says.
