After retirement from the railway police, sixty-five-year-old Hussain Khan takes pictures of the dead at the OGH mortuary

Who is not game for clicking pictures of events and tourists spots? But taking snaps of the dead is not everyone’s cup of tea.

Decomposed and mutilated bodies offer a revolting sight; but for Hussain Khan, clicking such pictures is part of his profession. The 65-year-old, a retired police head constable, has been doing it for the last many years at the Osmania General Hospital mortuary.

It all started after Mr. Hussain retired from the Government Railway Police (GRP) in 2005. As per rules, the police keep a photograph of victims of unnatural deaths in its record. And it is here that Mr. Hussain’s services were required.

“I was used to seeing and handling bodies of train accident victims so I did not find the job difficult. I was entrusted with the job of conducting ‘panchanama’ and shifting the bodies to the mortuary,” he says.

The 65-year-old now takes photographs of all bodies, including unknown ones, and preserves them.

“If anyone comes in search of missing persons, I show them [pictures of] the bodies. Many people have identified their relatives through the photographs,” he says.

His service is free for unknown bodies, though he collects some money from the relatives of those identified.

“I spend a considerable amount in getting the photographs developed at a local studio. But at the end of the day, I do manage to make some money. The relatives of the dead offer money recognising my service,” he says. For the sexagenarian Mr. Hussain, however, the job has now become something of a social service.

This gentle Hyderabadi, who is doing his MS, will be only one of the two from India – the other one being Lucky Vatnani (also from the city) – to take part in the Q School event

Far away in the United Kingdom, Dr. Mohammed Khizar Raoof, who is pursuing Masters Degree in Surgery (Medicine), will represent India in the prestigious World Snooker Q-School event for the third time and with the hopes of an improved performance.

For this gentle Hyderabadi, who is doing his MS in Deccan College of Medical Sciences here, will be only one of the two from India – interestingly the other one being Lucky Vatnani (also from the city) – to take part in this Q School event.

Even if they qualify for the semi-finals in the Q-School event, it means eligibility to compete in the Professional Tour which offers a mind-boggling 4.5 million pounds for the calendar year.

Competing in the major world events is nothing new for the 28-year-old Khizar as he was there for the 2006 world professional billiards meet in Leeds (UK) and also attended the 2006 ‘Stars of the Future’ training programme in the famed World Snooker Academy (Sheffield).

A runner-up in the All India snooker shootout last year, Khizar’s passion for the sport is unmistakable.

Always taking time off to show his prowess on the green baize. “Essentially, the Q School event comprises a set of three tournaments in which 12 semi-finalists from each event will find a place on the professional snooker main tour and a chance to rub shoulders with the greats of snooker like Ronnie O Sullivan,” reminds Dr. Khizar.

“Yes, I will be leaving for WSA prior to the Q School to get used to the playing conditions and sharpen my skills. This itself is a huge experience for the top amateurs and professionals will be there in action at the Academy,” the Hyderabadi says.

How good are your chances?

“This year, I think I am seasoned enough to do well in the English conditions, brushing aside the home sickness which many of us Indians generally face in the circuit,” Khizar says with a big smile.

“Definitely, I have a feel of who is lined up against me in the Q-School event and am confident of pulling off a surprise win,” signs off the doctor with the deft hands in cue sports too.

Guntur nun Glowrey on way to sainthood

GunturNunHF29mar2013

Hyderabad:

The first nun-doctor missionary, who spent her life in India, mostly in Guntur and Bengaluru serving poor patients, will take her first step to sainthood on Wednesday.

The Vatican gave the nod for Sister Dr Mary Glowrey, an Australian of Irish origin, to be declared ‘Servant of God in India’, the first step to become a Catholic saint. The announcement of her declaration as Servant of God will be made by Bishop Gali Bali of Guntur diocese at a ‘chrism mass’ on Wednesday.

Dr Glowrey first landed in Guntur in 1920 at the age of 33. She came as a missionary of the Society of Jesus, Mary and Joseph and ran a dispensary which turned into St Joseph’s Hospital.

Director-general of the Catholic Health Associat-ion of India, Dr Tomi Tho-mas, says, “Sister Glowrey founded the Catholic Health Association of India in 1943 which now has 3,500 health care institutions in the country and is the largest NGO in the health sector. She was born in Victoria in 1887 and studied medicine and worked at the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital and Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne and also had a private practice.”

Bishop Gali Bali called her a “special creation of God and a great soul who embraced the whole world”. She left her lucrative career as an ENT specialist after she chanced on a pamphlet in 1915 about the appalling infant mortality rate in India. It changed the direction of her life.

“Pope Pius XI later bestowed a special blessing on her medical work and, as Sister Mary of the Sacred Heart, she became the first nun-doctor missionary. At Guntur, she trained local women to be pharmacists, nurses and midwives. She often travelled to visit the sick and dying in remote villages. She also used Indian traditional medicine,” the Bishop said.

My Jesus, I love you, were her last words

The people of Guntur were thrilled on hearing the news that Sister Glowrey will be declared ‘Servant of God in India’, the first step to become a Catholic saint.

Elizabeth, 65, of Amaravathi Road, Guntur, said, “I was brought up by Sr Glowrey. I cannot forget her love and affection. She used to be a very caring person for the poor and a devout Christian.”

Sister Victoria who had worked at St Joseph’s said, “It is a great honour for St Joseph’s General Hospital at Guntur as its founder is in the process of canonisation. She converted a small dispensary into a huge hospital which today is serving the poor and the needy.”

Dr Glowrey died on May 5, 1957. Her last words are said to be, “Jesus, Mary and Joseph” and “My Jesus, I love you”.

She spent her last days in Bengaluru and her vision led to the establishment of one of the best Indian medical colleges, St John’s Medical College.
