‘The queen of melodies’ has been officially credited by Guinness Book of Records for singing 17, 695 songs in 12 Indian languages.

Renowned playback singer P. Susheela Mohan, who has won many awards and earned accolades in a career spanning five decades, has added two more to her awards cabinet.

She has now been recognised by both the Guinness Book of World Records and Asia Book of Records for singing most number of songs in Indian languages. The usually reticent singer met journalists in Chennai on Tuesday to celebrate her new award.

While Guinness Book of Records has officially credited her for singing 17, 695 songs (solo, duet and chorus backed songs) in twelve Indian languages, Asia Book of Records has recognised her for singing close to 17, 330 songs.

Speaking about the awards, P. Susheela reminded everyone present that the adjudicators had only considered songs she had song from 1960s. “Please remember that I started singing from 1951,” she said.

None of this would have been possible without the work of her fans, who, by setting up psusheela.org, painstakingly catalogued the songs that she has sung over the last few decades and sent it to the adjudicators of the award.

Reflecting on the recognition, the singer said that she views it as an acknowledgement of her hard work. “There is a lot of hard work that has gone behind this achievement. Today, with so many television channels and newspapers, a talented singer can shine through quickly. But when I was singing, it was very slow and I had work my way up , step by step,” she said.

Crediting her husband for her success, she said that her husband, a doctor, was a corner stone in her life. “He fell in love with my voice and sacrificed his life so that I have a great career in playback singing,” she said.

She was candid in her response when asked why she had never considered a career in acting. “I was offered a chance to act by several directors, but I refused saying that I wouldn’t want to act even if I was paid a crore,” she said, adding, “My heart was in music.”

When asked why she is not singing anymore, the singer said that she would love to sing in movies if someone offered a good song. When she was nudged by journalists to sing her favourite song, she ended the press conference by singing Ennai pada sonnal, enna paada thondrum from Pudhiya Paravai, a hit song of 1964.

Carol Faison
Carol Faison

Carol Linda Faison, founder of Care & Share Charitable Trust, Vijayawada, passed away at Daddy’s Home in Gannavaram on Saturday afternoon.

In a statement, the organisation president Noel Harper said the funeral will take place on Monday evening.

An American living in Venice, Italy, Ms. Faison visited Vijayawada in 1995 and discovered the harsh reality of the street children and the plight of the handicapped here. She began to focus her efforts on helping the less fortunate children and raised funds for a laboratory for production of callipers, artificial limbs and crutches and started a special home for the handicapped.

She also built an elementary school in Manginapudi. Later, she constructed two partially self-sustainable villages — Daddy’s Home and Butterfly Hill — with a dispensary and school for destitute children.

In 1997, she founded the Care & Share Charitable Trust in India to manage all the programmes for the children here. In 2000, she also established Care & Share Italia Onlus in Italy to raise funds for the trust here.

Gold knee joint revolutionises replacement surgery

3D gold knee and ePlus poly cover can also enhance longevity, says doctor

Research in total knee replacement surgery has led to gold knee-blended joint with vitamin ePlus poly cover. The Guntur-based Sai Bhaskar Hospitals has successfully operated upon a 65-year-old man, Gopal Rao, and implanted a gold ceramic-coated knee joint.

Managing Director Busireddy Narendra Reddy said here on Saturday that for the first time a vitamin ePlus poly cover with gold plated knee joint, gold femur, was used in AP while it has been in vogue in the USA since July 2011.

“In comparison to other joint prostheses, knee replacement implants, made of cobalt and chromium that continuously release allergenic metal ions, with ceramic surface coating on metallic components has many benefits in reducing both allergic reactions and wear,” Dr. Narendra Reddy said.

The new 3D gold knee and ePlus poly cover can also enhance the longevity and performance in total knee replacement surgery.

Mission Possible: India’s First All-woman Ocean Crew Set for Global Adventure

Visakhapatnam :

A boat or the sea doesn’t differentiate between a man and a woman and there are no shortcuts to the physical and mental fitness required to sail the open seas, says Lt. Commander Vartika Joshi, who is set to lead India’s first all-women crew to sail the oceans.

Lt. Commander Joshi, along with a crew of five women, will soon go globe-trotting. Their adventure is likely to start in 2017. The team stood out at the just-concluded International Fleet Review (IFR) where the crew was on INSV Mhadei, a sail training boat of the Indian Navy on which they are currently training.

“We are training every day for the sailing and it requires a hard level of physical activity. You have to be physically and mentally very strong and there is no short-cut to it,” Lt. Commander Joshi told IANS in an interview.

“It does not matter whether you are a man or a woman, you have to do what you are required to do,” said the sailor, who is a naval architect by training.

The crew is being trained by Commander Dilip Donde, the first Indian sailor to circumnavigate solo across the globe on INSV Mhadei.

Commander Donde, in the same tone, said a sailor is a sailor, irrespective of gender.

“The sea does not differentiate between a man and a woman. A sailor is a sailor,” Commander Donde told IANS.

Asked about his guru mantra to the team, the commander said: “Never let your guard down… You have to be on your toes all the time.”

Riding the open seas in a sailing boat is not an easy feat to pull off.

The crew needs to be aware of every inch of the boat, which they may need to repair themselves in case of damage. Weather in the open sea also remains unpredictable, and smaller boats face more challenges.

Lt. Commander Joshi was confident.

“This is certainly Mission Possible. We have been taking special training on circumnavigation since (last) April. The course included navigation, equipment, managing a crisis or distress situation and communication courses,” she explained.

The team sailed to Visakhapatnam for the IFR from Goa, and is now on its way back to continue the training.

The boat on which the journey will finally be undertaken is at present under construction in Goa, and the crew has to familiarise itself with every inch of the vessel.

Apart from Lt. Commander Joshi, the team includes Lt. Pratibha Jamwal and Lt. P Swathi in the core group, besides Lt. Vijaya Devi and Sub Lt. Payal Gupta. A sixth member is yet to be named.

INSV Mhadei had been used by Commander Abhilash Tomy for his own solo, unassisted, non-stop circumnavigation under sail.

Yamini’s Padma Vibhushan has hometown jubilant

Vijayawada :

The septugenarian dance exponent Mungara Yamini Krishna Murthy did her native Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh proud with her highest honour of Padma Vibhushan, the second highest civilian award, to be conferred on her on Republic Day. She had received Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan earlier for great contribution to Indian dance.

A legend in Kuchipudi and Bharata Natyam dance forms, Yamini was born in Madanaalli in Chittoor district on December 20, 1940. But she left her birthplace at an early age to fathom the depths of dance. She grew up in Chennai and later moved to Delhi. Yamini underwent training under the tutelage of Vedantam Lakshmi Narayana Sastry, Chinta Krishnamurthy and Pasumarthy Venugopala Sarma at Kuchipudi and Vempati Chinasatyam in Chennai, doyens of Kuchipudi dance forms.

The fellow-artistes from the district began tracing the footprints of the veteran dancer upon receiving the news of conferring Padma Vibhushan upon her. Romella Munikrishna Reddy of Bharata Muni Art Academy, Madanapalli, said with a sense of elation, “It is Yamini Krishnamurthy who found an envious place for our nondescript town on the world map after great philosopher and son of the soil Jiddu Krishnamurthy”. Although she left the place a long time ago, her hometown owned her honour gleefully.

Yamini Krishnamurthy broke the glass ceiling and forayed into the dance field, which was considered as a male bastion in those days. Sumana, a dancer and writer from Tirupati, observed, “She is a great inspiration to every artiste. Her abhinayam and expressions are marvellous and a model to emulate for all the upcoming artistes,” Sumana said. According to her, Yamini achieved an equal ease in both Kuchipudi and Bharata Natyam, a rare feet in deed. “It is a belated honour, bust she really deserves it,” sumana commented.

Dwaram Lakshmi, Head of Department of Music and Fine Arts, Sri Padmavati Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam, said it was unfair to limit her unusual accomplishments in the dance world to one particular place by virtue of it being her birthplace. She made the country as a whole proud by showcasing its culture, especially Kuchipudi, on a world platform.

CA Final Topper Clears Exam in One Sitting, Makes Chennai Proud

Chennai /  Vijayawada :

A 23-year-old BCom graduate from Chennai, James John Britto, has emerged the national topper in his maiden attempt in the final Chartered Accountant exam, the results of which were announced on Sunday. Trailing him was Mohan Kumar Nagolu from Thottamledu, a non-descript hamlet under Chodavaram village panchayat near Srikalahasti in Chittoor district in Andhra, who emerged second.

CAtopperCHENNAI20jan2016

A resident of Mogappair, Britto completed his graduation in Loyola College. The final exam of one of the most toughest and rigorous professional courses in the world was conducted in November. Britto’s overall score was 595 out of 800 (74.38 per cent) which secured him the first rank in the country. The CA exams are divided into three levels — Common Proficiency Test (CPT), Integrated Professional Competence Course (IPCC) and the Final Examination.

“After clearing the foundation exams (CPT), I started preparing for the intermediate exams (IPCC). Since I did not wish to discontinue, I was preparing for the IPCC alongside my UG course,” said Britto.

On strategies he adopted to clear the exam, which people with even five to 10 years of professional CA experience find tough, he said, “I stuck to my basic plan of studying hard for 10-12 hours on an average everyday and this eventually peaked during the last few weeks of preparation.”

When asked about his future plans, one thing Britto was clear about was that he wanted to work in the city.

“As of now, I am looking at employment and have kept options open regarding the nature of the company. But one thing is for sure, I wouldn’t prefer working abroad as I love working here in the city,” said Britto, son of A Raja, a leading chartered accountant.

His father being in the field for nearly 30 years was one of the factors that Britto said contributed to his great success. “My father, who is in the same industry for close to 30 years, helped me a lot during the preparations and I would say his role was crucial throughout the CA exam journey.” Of the 42, 469 candidates who took up the exam last November, only 2,440 (5.75%) managed to clear the exam.

Nagolu Mohan Kumar from Tirupati and Avinash Sancheti from Kolkata secured the second and third rank in the final exam with scores 572 (71. 5 per cent) and 566 (70.75 per cent) respectively. When Mohan received a call from Manoj Fadnis, the president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), informing him about his results, Mohan Kumar was literally on cloud nine.

“My happiness knew no bounds when Manoj Sir called me up and told me that I had secured the all-India second rank. The call was immediately followed by another one, this time from M Devaraj Reddy, vice-president of ICAI. I was thrilled and shared the news with my family,” Mohan Kumar told Express over the phone. Mohan, who pursued the CA course right from Intermediate, took coaching from Superwhiz in Vijayawada and did his articleship with Datla and Associates in Hyderabad. He attributed his success in the CA final to hard work. “Since November, four months prior to the commencement of exams, I had been studying 12 to 13 hours a day, including Sundays,” he said, opining that systematic preparation is the key for success in CA exams.

Mohan Kumar’s father N Nagaraju Reddy is a farmer, while his brother Bhanuprakash has completed his BTech. Kumar’s entire family celebrated his success with the villagers also joining them.

Going forward, Mohan Kumar said, he wanted to work with a good MNC for three-four years before going for own practice.

Meanwhile, Superwhizz principal S Venkateswara Rao said along with Mohan Kumar, the institute had bagged three more ranks within the first 50 ranks. J Harsha Sai bagged the 7th rank, M Swathi the 32nd and P Pradeep Rai secured the 50th rank at the national level. The ICAI also released results for the CPT exams conducted during the December 2015 on Sunday. The overall pass percentage for this exam was around 34.45 percent as only 34,129 out of the 99,077 candidates who appeared for it cleared the test.
